37 MPG - not a hybrid. I give you my Toyota Yaris.
It's little, it's funny looking, and I just filled up this morning to find I'm getting 37 MPG. That's in traffic that's about half stop & crawl and half 40-60 mph with stop lights (not freeway). It's comfortable to drive in city traffic - my back doesn't hurt.

She's funny looking, but cute. Ours is silver (and her name, surprisingly enough, is Bertha).

but I tend to coast on the downhills too.

2. I'll take one
Just have it dropped off in my driveway.

I have been driving a hawg lately and it's killing me.

A pick0up truck that gets about 10mpg. Well, it's crappy anyhow. Ten dollars to go 25-30 miles or so. It is way too early to do the math.

Nice car indeed. I don't think it looks funny either. It's sharp.

10. Why would you feel more secure in a larger car/SUV when a semi passes you?
That is a false sense of security; if a semi hits you, you're dead, no matter what you're driving. Might as well get good mileage then.

Fortunately, I don't have to drive far each day to work, so good mileage is not that important.

My VW gets 20ish in town and 30 on the highway, when it is actually running. It's costing me $300 for a starter and that is before labor. Don't know how much a Honda starter is because I have never had to replace one.

Dammit Honda! Why don't you make station wagons?!

14. Still driving my '06 Ion....
The mileage is pretty decent- 35+ on the highway, 26-ish in town (I usually average 28 to 31 per tank). And though it's no race car, the 140 HP engine (with a manual) gives it pretty decent accelleration (at the expense of your mpg's of course).

Otherwise, the car is a total hunk o' crap. I've had electrical problems out the yin-yang, the sunroof broke a couple of weeks ago, NOW the AC blower isn't functioning right, and one of the windows will stop working sporadically. I really want to dump it before the warranty is out, but my frugal side is fighting it.

24. Yeah...
It's a Saturn- my 2nd one. Had a 95 SL2 that was a pretty decent car- 11 years old, and 160K miles on it when I got rid of it, and that was largely because the AC had died. The engine was fine. My current one has been an entirely different story.

I've also heard bad, bad things about Mitsubishis.

Either the AC house is "knocked" lose and stops draining, or it gets cloggesd w/ debris and stops draining. Well, it drains...into the dash board! x(

one of the things I don't like is that going with both windows down (in the 2-door), there's a horrible eardrum-thudding air pressure thing, very unpleasant.

34. 48 MPG with my VW Jetta TDI
My trusty Volkswagen Jetta TDI gets 48 MPG on the highway, and very healthy mileage in the city as well. I regularly get over 650 miles _per tank_, meaning I rarely fill it up. That's good with the super-elevated cost of diesel, which is currently above the cost of gasoline.

While also named one of the Top 10 Most Fuel-Efficient Cars for 2006, it has more torque than you would expect, and rather than being a loud and slow smoke-belching box, it's fast and stylish! Granted, it costs more than a Yaris, but the fuel cost savings add up fast. Especially compared to my old Honda Accord V6; it being crippled by an automatic transmission worsened its mileage. The TDI gets about 2.5-3X as much on the same amount of fuel.

41. I would often get close to 60mpg highway-only
in my first car, a 1981 VW Rabbit Diesel. Only 52hp, and it could barely get out of its own way, but it was super-efficient. I'd love to have one again and run biodiesel in it, VW's are great for that.

45. That's better than most hybrids on the highway, too
And when you add the fact that the Jetta has a bigger gas tank (well, "fuel tank," as it's a Diesel car), you get more miles per tank than you would from a Prius. The great mileage of the TDI is not well known in America, which is a shame. The hybrids got a lot of hype, and I test drove a Civic hybrid, but having survived a crash caused by an SUV driver in my '89 Civic, it was too small for my taste. (ouch, to say the least.) The Jetta is bigger, and you'll never need to worry about replacing all the hybrid's batteries.

Mileage in the TDI gets really good after about 20,000 miles. When I first got it, I was very disappointed, as it only got 450 miles per tank. Later I learned about overfilling the tank (which is relatively safe in diesels) and cooled my driving style a bit. Nowadays I keep the engine at around 1500 RPM, and shift if it gets above 2000. That's possible in a 5-speed manual. Automatics kill mileage! The other thing I'll do is eventually have 5th gear deepened, meaning it will run at lower RPM at high speeds. That should raise the mileage by at least a few MPG, putting it over 50. And if I have the European chips put in, that'll push it up towards 55 or 60. sweeeet. 8-)

42. Have you had any reliability issues with it? That's what really scares me
about VWs! I've read enough stories (mostly on VW boards from actual owners) saying things like "Don't expect Honda/Toyota level reliability"! They are coming out with their all new "ultra-clean" TDI later this year which supposedly gets better gas mileage than ever before, but I'm not sure if I'm still willing to pull the trigger!

I would KILL to see Honda bring their Civic diesel (currently being sold in the European market) over here...

I know there's stories out there of things going wrong, but I've never had a major problem with mine. I was told at the dealer that Volkswagen bought up all the suppliers that were giving them the bad parts, so supposedly, things are better. Naturally, we can trust what a dealer tells us... ;-)

They're funny looking, in much the same way a Prius is, so I presume they have a similarly low coefficient of drag.
