BOSTON— As the Red Sox learned when they traded Bronson Arroyo at the start of the 2006 season, there is no such thing as too much starting pitching, no matter how much of it seems to be flowing through the pipeline.
So, now that Boston has gotten winning starts in back-to-back games out of pitchers who were in the minor leagues at the start of this season, what will it do with all this pitching?
“If you think,” manager Terry Francona said, “you need only five starters for a year, you’re crazy. It doesn’t happen very often and it’s nice to be able to not have to bring somebody back early and then all of a sudden pay the price a month down the road.”
The latest arm to audition was an older one in the person of Bartolo Colón, who didn’t pitch as well as rookie Justin Masterson did the night before, but pitched about as well as he or the Sox expected in their 6-3 victory last night over the Royals. It was his first Boston start.
