Well, my friend lost all the structures on his place to the fire
mentioned here - http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=7758262&mesg_id=7758262

House, barn, garage with upstairs apartment. He got his horses out and some of the dogs and cats. Not sure how many he may have lost - I just got a quick email from him.

I'm thankful he and at least some of the animals are okay but just sick at the thought of the place being gone. I lived there when I first came to California. :(

Good thoughts please for all the folks up there.

1. CA wildfires are no joke...
I heard about the SC fire when I got up this morning. I too have friends who live up in the hills, and I worry about them getting ot on those small roads once a fire gets rolling. Those country roads are some charming to drive on a summer day, but when fire hits they can be lethal.

Sp sorry to hear about your friends loss -- hopefully the rest of his critters will make it safely through the mess.

3. I hope your friends are okay too
No joke indeed and with the wind blowing, its almost impossible to fight. It is listed as "0% contained" right now. :(

4. I am assuming so
I got just a brief email from his BlackBerry. It feels a little bit like losing MY home - I lived up there for 2 years and cannot picture it gone.

6. I must be one of those people on everyone's ignore list
I'll have to remember that Denise Richards and Indiana Jones are a lot more compelling than individual tragedies. ~sigh~

We get our fair share of natural catastrophe here in TX, but for some reason I just don't think anything compares to the CA wildfires.
So sorry about your friend. I hope he was able to get all his animals.

we're definitely keeping an eye on changing conditions up here.

on edit: we're having wind gusts in Scotts Valley up to 45mph right now. Not good for fighting a fire.

:scared:

9. Hi Shine
It's a nasty one and you know how hard it is to maneuver up there. Add in the darn wind and it really makes things bad.

10. Hazel Dell, Eureka Canyon, Mt. Madonna....those are all my favorite cycling roads
:( I'm hearing sirens here in SV as I type this.

I can't believe these winds, either. Whew!

Sorry, again, about your friend. He must've been one of the 10 homes destroyed. :( How tragic.

Things can happen so fast in fire, esp with major winds. We'll be watching the conditions all day.

Hang in there, girl. Stay safe. :loveya:

11. You too, my friend
I have to remind myself that structures can be rebuilt - it's the lives that matter. I'm grateful he and his family, and from what it sounds like most of his pets, are safe.

13. Wind with Fires is horrible.
When I was a teen in Southern California a fire blew by our house. Our neighbors lost some outbuildings, but they got their horses out.

The fire was so fast, it started miles away, and I remember we went from curiousity -- watching the fire from our hill -- to extreme urgency as burning embers started falling out of the sky and firetrucks screamed in and fire fighters started setting up at the house right next door to us.

:(
