I said, "well, sir, that's going to be President Obama."
A panhandler asked me today, "who do you think our great country will swear in next year?" I answered "well, sir, that's going to be President Obama." He looked like he was going to cry. He said, "Thank you, ma'am, thank you, thank you" and gave me a knuckle punch.

And people think such "bums" don't care about things like government. Perhaps this guy will have a better life with President Obama.

3. Sometimes not all bums are bums
I gave one a job at the bookstore I was managing and got a friend to rent him an apartment. I even loaned him my clothes. Great guy. Turned out he was an ex college prof of English. But he'd lost his wife and kids in a terrible accident and fallen apart (and who could blame him for that?) Sometimes people just need a second chance or a helping hand.

Totally Bertha to talk to panhandelers, most people just sneer at them. Not our Bertha!

Khash.

7. You do what you can....
It's what being a liberal is all about - reaching out to those less fortunate than ourselves, in whatever way we can. You treated him like a human being, I doubt many people do that.

8. Oh, what an invigorating experience! Glad you could help him
out; I think you gave him alot of hope in those few moments.

One afternoon after school I took my kids for an early dinner at their favorite burger place. A thin man in worn clothes came in, carrying a coat, messed up hair. He sat down after buying a cup of coffee. I went over and quietly asked him if he had eaten today, and he meekly said replied "no." I went over to the order station and had them ring up a big hamburger for him with everything on it and paid for it. It wasn't that much, and I hoped he enjoyed it. I left as it was being served. I also used the chance to explain to my kids that some people are hungry, and when we can, we need to do something to help them.
