1. Spielberg did 'Sugarland Express'?
I didn't know that.

Damned good little film. Great acting, excellent photography.

7. It was a brilliant story to begin with
I read Richard Matheson's short story in Playboy before the film came out.

3. Way too hard to decide. Close Encounters isn't on the list...
but it would be hard to choose between that and JAWS. Coming in close seconds are Raiders and JP.

I like that kind of movie that he does. Adventure, I guess. The "serious drama" stuff, not so much.

16. true
It would have had such a punch if they'd gone a darker route. It didn't make any sense that for some reason Boston was mostly spared, but I'm okay with it being Boston, or course.

15. The Color Purple
Most people think of Spielberg's action movies as his definitive work, but I think The Color Purple is one of the best adaptations of a novel since To Kill A Mockingbird.

Not many movies make me cry tears of happiness, but the ending of this one always does. I love the way it is done, with the connecting scenes of Shug and the people from Harpos coming to the church, Albert realizing what a pos he is and breaking into his money stash to bring home Celie's sister and family, and the way everyone reconciles their damage by the end of the movie.

Spielberg makes great scenes of human transformation. The other similar one is from Schindler's List, when the ashes pour down on the city and the little kids think it's snow and start playing in it-he knows what it is and what his part can be in saving people. But Schindler's List, where it is an excellent movie, it is a difficult one to watch more than once. The Color Purple is one I can watch over and over again.

26. I'm really suprised at the lack of votes for Jurassic Park
Considering it revolutized the use the computer graphics in movies and had one of the best awe inspiring scenes in any movie when the humans first see the giant dinosaurs.

28. It had great things in it
but as a whole I found it a bit lacking.

Although I'm one of those who read the book first, so the way they tore apart the book and stitched it back together into a Frankenstein's monster version of itself bugged me when I finally saw the movie. :P
