THE DALLES, Ore. -- A passenger jumped to his death from a Greyhound bus doing at least 65 miles an hour on Interstate-84 in The Dalles Wednesday morning, police said.

Police investigate the scene.
The 40-year-old tried to jump from a window near the back of the bus at about 3 a.m. and another passenger managed to pull him back. But then he tried again, seconds later, and this time he got out the window.
He landed on the freeway shoulder and died instantly, police said.
"Troopers report the estimated 3 foot by 4 foot window was opened when the victim pulled on an emergency release lever that allowed the bottom of the window to swing open, providing the space for him to jump out," said Lt. Gregg Hastings with Oregon State Police. "The bus driver was unaware of what was happening until the man was in the process of jumping out as passengers were yelling to get the driver's attention."
Authorities have not yet released the man's name, pending notification of relatives. But police said he was not from Oregon.
I-84 was closed for three hours early Wednesday morning during the investigation.
