Didn't buy the popcorn and gave my SO the money back for my ticket.

Refusing to sit through 20 minutes of commercials and walking out of the theater...PRICELESS.

I. Will. Never. Go. To. The. Movies. Again.

I can wait to see it on cable.

It was the popcorn that sent me over the edge.

I have NEVER seen a FIVE DOLLAR bag of popcorn in MY LIFE.

8. I don't get to the movies very often....
I find most movies (at least the trailers) unappealing....

That said, I would have issues paying that much for popcorn myself.

I was going to go the drivein to see Indy IV and IronMan but Mr MB had to stay home and watch the Laker game, alas, no drivein for me...

Drivein bonus - byob and popcorn

11. Wouldn't recommened it depending on your type
Unless you're the kind of person who can have fun watching any movie, it would be worth waiting for. The CGI was questionable, the acting moderate, and the story too jumbled. Unless you can watch any movie and enjoy it no matter what, be glad you waited to catch it on cable or PPV.

Plus, a rental and a microwaveable bag of popcorn totals costs like $4 and it a lot more enjoyable in my opinion. You can pause it whenever you like.

23. May I make a suggestion? Thank you...
Libby, you can easily pop your own and bring it in a small travel bag to the theater. As long as the bag isn't too big, no one will say anything. Ignore any of their signs that say you can't bring in outside food. Those signs are illegal. Tell them you're on a special diet and can't eat their food. I'm supposed to be on low salt and fat free and NOTHING they sell is good for me.

Frequently (as we did last Saturday for "Kung Fu Panda" with the two grandkids), we carry sliced apples and finger-length carrots and water in small bottles to drink. Packaged granola bars are great too.

We go to the movies two or three times a week -- theater, too -- as a reviewer. The movie or musical is free in exchange for an on-line review, but the food is VERY expensive and pretty bad for us, to boot.

However, feel free to ignore this suggestion if you wish. Just trying to be helpful. Drama Queen? Hey, I'm very sorry about whatever -- politics, probably or something else?

Let's bury the hatchet anytime now, OK?

Have a good week in Winston-Salem.

20. That's the truly fucked-up part.
Because of the way the distribution deals are set up, movie theaters make almost nothing on selling you movie tickets. So even though they are selling you $1 worth of concessions for $11, that is paying for the employees, lease/maintenance, and all of the other overhead that goes into running a business. Overall, movie theaters are actually pretty unprofitable. That's right, movie theaters aren't actually in the business of showing movies, but of selling overpriced junk food (not that it is really their fault - the studios hold all the cards in the distribution negotiation).

Totally idiotic system, and the studio bigwigs are wondering why movie attendance keeps getting lower every year.

Edited on Wed May-28-08 08:13 PM by dubeskin
That's the thing. They charge you $1.50 more for the Jumbo + Refill over the Microscopic because it costs them hardly anything to make the popcorn. They aren't losing a ton, and you're just getting extra calories. But it's just so hard to resist the buttery goodness of movie theater popcorn...

Edited because I said "loosing" instead of "losing".

35. We saw Indy this weekend.
4 people...

$33.00 for the tickets (and one of us was TWELVE!)
$37.50 for popcorn and drinks!

The drinks were RIDICULOUSLY HUGE, but
it didn't make mathematical sense to
get them any smaller.

NO bladder could have held that throughout
the movie (except my husband's of course)!

I won't be buying "snacks" at the theater

12. you know, I actually used to like the previews, but now that there
are commercials in the lead up to the movie, it really, REALLY irritates me.

Last movie I saw in the theater was The Bourne Ultimatum; before that, The Devil Wears Prada, before that, Farenheit 9/11. I don't go to the movies very often, either. But if I do, there is a box of Milk Duds in my handbag, maybe licorice, too, because I refuse to pay concession counter prices.

I'm one of "those" kind of movie people who enjoys the ritual so much. Have to get there in plenty of time to get my goodies, get the good seat right in the middle...no talking or whispering. It's something that I really enjoy usually but the prices are outrageous. Makes me furious.

27. Reviewers get to go free at noon or at 7 PM, depending on the movie.
Frankly, most of the films that have been released since the beginning of the year -- aren't worth your money.

Some of the best films are shown independently at the small "art houses" and then released to DVD.

One of the best values is at www.filmmovement.com
You get one movie each month from juried film festivals around the world, which you do NOT have to return. That comes to about to about $12.00 a month.

You can get a really good idea of what you're going to see at:

http://us.imdb.com (The Internet Movie Database)

http://www.rottentomatoes.com (Very useful site and easy to use.)

http://www.metacritic.com (Rates films on a 1 - 100 point scale.)

Hope this helps!

PS. My review of "Kung Fu Panda" will be posted in the DU Lounge early Friday morning 6/6/08.

19. You should always bring your own food.
The big movie chains make their money not from ticket sales but from the concessions. At a local supermaket, I could buy a big bag of Twizzlers or popcorn, a big box of Milk Duds or some other chocolate, and a 20 oz bottle of tonic for 5-6 dollars total.

24. Hi undeterred... posted upthread. They cannot eject you from a theater for
bringing in your own food. It is illegal to put up a sign to that effect.

If anyone queries you, tell them you're on a special diet.

Do as we reviewers do -- bring something healthy (apples, carrots, small pieces of celery or cucumbers or granola bars -- and water).

Peace, love and happiness,

serving better food themselves. Private venue? That's debatable -- maybe if you rent the whole theater for a conference and they cannot provide your food. Nevertheless, they want your business.

Look for some of these in your area. Here are a couple in our neck of the woods:

http://www.cinetopiatheaters.com/ (Vancouver, WA and coming soon to Barrows Road, Tigard, OR west of Portland, OR)

www.livingroomtheaters.com (Downtown Portland, OR)

I've gone so far as to call in and ask them directly if someone on a special diet would be prevented from entering. A few years ago, a male moviegoer who is a diabetic took this to court. He won. Sorry I don't remember all the details. The movie managers are usually helpful if you play your cards right. Yes, we do bring a navy blue bag with a beverage sleeve inside purchased in some winery wayback when.

Cordially,

34. Also, if the theater has a restaurant license, the health dep't may not allow outside food to be
brought in (things like baby food excepted). This varies by city and state, though.

In any case, you're right--places of public accommodation, including movie theaters, can refuse service to anyone, for any reason, except for reasons related to discrimination based on a protected class.

In Oregon (where Radio_Lady lives, if memory serves): A place of public accommodation is defined in state law as any place that offers the public accommodations, advantages, facilities or privileges, whether in the nature of goods, services, lodging, amusements or otherwise. It is illegal to discriminate in places of public accommodation on the basis of race, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, religion, marital status, physical or mental disability, or age (18 years of age and older).

http://www.oregon.gov/BOLI/CRD/C_Crprotoc.shtml

Note that "special diet" is not on the list. It would not be on the list in any state. Even if you have a protected disability that requires a special diet, protection likely does not extend to your "right" to have a snack of your choosing while in the movies (or anywhere else). As far as I know, "rights" concerning food are more along the lines of the right to actually have some if you're incarcerated. If, say, you cannot go without your special food or drink for the two-hour duration of the film, I suggest you just talk to the manager of the movie theater, or carry some in your purse and be quiet about it.

That said, plenty of theater owners don't care if you (discreetly) bring in your own food, just as some turn a blind eye to teenagers buying a ticket to "The Fluffy Bunny Happy Hour" and sneaking in to three different rated-R movies, especially if the theater isn't busy that day.

Okay, you have a great point, the one about the commercials we have to sit through. The price of the popcorn is a joke, too, always tastes like garbage.

Nevertheless, I predict that you will go to the movies again, late and with your own, smuggled-in snack.

30. Really. These theaters are hurting for business, because of all the economic pressures.
If someone asked you to leave, ask for the manager, and try reasoning together. You can also tell that person to "go threaten the bedbugs!" My mother-in-law from Brooklyn, NY used to tell that to rude people!

You buy the movie. Purchasing the food is an option.

Have to get to the theater by 6:25 PM for a 7:00 PM preview.

But you're right about film fare. Hasn't been too great so far in 2008.

We rented "The Good German" from last year. Grandma fell asleep on the couch. Grandpa rates it a "muddled movie" with a distasteful theme.

I went to the drive in with a guy from high school and his younger brother (age 11 who he was babysitting if I recall correctly), whom he put in the trunk to sneak in. But when we got to the movies, my date would not let his brother out of the truck because he found out he had snitched on him to their parents over something......anyways, I watched the entire movie while listening to this yelling and thumping from the trunk....when I voiced concern about the air in the trunk my date said it's fine, I already checked, he has plenty of air. :O
