The Mope-Rock Top 100 - What are the best break-up songs?
I'm going through a very painful breakup, so I need good music to get me through this endless parade of shit.

Okay, I think the best nasty break-up song is the Smiths' Miserable Lie. It is perhaps the most vicious, snarling indictment of love and sex and relationships ever recorded. Could there be a better summation of love/lust gone wrong than "And 'love' is just a miserable lie"?

So, goodbye
Please stay with your own kind
And I'll stay with mine

There's something against us
It's not time
It's not time
So, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye

I know I need hardly say
How much I love your casual way
Oh, but please put your tongue away
A little higher and we're well away
The dark nights are drawing in
And your humour is as black as them
I look at yours, you laugh at mine
And "love" is just a miserable lie
You have destroyed my flower-like life
Not once - twice
You have corrupt my innocent mind
Not once - twice
I know the wind-swept mystical air
It means : I'd like to see your underwear
I recognise that mystical air
It means : I'd like to seize your underwear
What do we get for our trouble and pain ?
Just a rented room in Whalley Range
What do we get for our trouble and pain ?
...Whalley Range !
Into the depths of the criminal world
I followed her ...

I need advice, I need advice
I need advice, I need advice
Nobody ever looks at me twice
Nobody ever looks at me twice

I'm just a country-mile behind
The world

I'm just a country-mile behind
The whole world
Oh oh, oh ...

I'm just a country-mile behind
The world

I'm just a country-mile behind
The whole world
Oh oh, oh ...

Take me when you go
Oh oh, oh...

Take me when you go
Oh oh, oh ...

I need advice, I need advice

Come on, list your favourites here!

Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 10:52 PM by DeposeTheBoyKing
I won’t be here when you come home
I’m sorry if you don’t understand forgive me if you can
But I can see another road
And I ain’t coming back

Don’t look for me around this town
Cause I will be so far away you’ll never find me anywhere
And I won’t take no souvenirs no perfume picture promises
Because it’s over
And I ain’t coming back

You gave me everything
And now I’m breaking your heart
You know that I don’t mean
To tear your world apart

I would never leave, if I thought you couldn’t stand the pain
A letter in the hall, is written on the wall
A letter with no words of love at all
Because it’s over
And I ain’t coming back

And as I close the door
I know I’m breaking your heart
I should have loved you more
Instead I’ve torn your world apart

And as I walk into the lonely afternoon
I feel sad enough, I feel bad enough
And all the times when you are lonely where you are
Please don’t hate me then, I just could not pretend

Tears, feel the tears, I can feel the tears, running through the years

BUT I DO LOVE THE SMITHS AND MORRISSEY!!!!!!!!

6. Sorry
I'm sorry that I failed to respond to your comment on your current breakup. There's no doubt that it's one of the most PAINFUL feelings. I almost think in a way it's worse than having a loved one die. At least with the latter, you know there's no chance of running into them. I HATED running into my ex or even contemplating the possibility of such.

Best of luck - you'll get through it!

It's not a breakup song, but how about "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now?"

You didn't have to respond, but I am grateful you did. This reaaally sucks - sympathy or empathy is always welcomed.

Think(Let Tomorrow Bee)....hands down

THINK (LET TOMORROW BEE)
Could I hold on, or should I hold on to you?
Ask, I'll tell the truth; there's nothing I should hide
And if I move to slow, if you're bored I need to know
I’m weak to hide inside, to force what I don't feel
If all we have is a question, there's no hope to find a future
But something in me cries for you
It feels too real this time
I think I love you, though I don't know what love means
Girl of my dreams, or a friend that one day leaves
Could I trust this when I've lied to myself before?
Will I do it all again to taste what I've imagined we could be?
Look what I've become; this pressure that we feel
In a world of possibilities, this may not prove real
But could we give enough, backed against a wall?
Too close to breathe, but too far to fall
All I ever wanted was to feel you closer to me
And it's sad to feel this resistance
What once before had felt so free
Let tomorrow bee
I can't be so impatient
Pushing every answer, when there isn't any question
Let me feel good now
And though this may have to end, I hope I'm always with you
Honestly your friend
I think I love you

Not a typical break up song, but it's all in there; when you KNOW the end is coming :(

5. a traditional break-up song
http://www.ronstadt-linda.com/silk.htm

Long Long Time

written by Gary B. White
Universal MCA Music (ASCAP)

Love will abide, take things in stride
Sounds like good advice but there's no one at my side
And time washes clean love's wounds unseen
That's what someone told me but I don't know what it means.

Cause I've done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think I'm gonna love you for a long long time

Caught in my fears
Blinking back the tears
I can't say you hurt me when you never let me near
And I never drew one response from you
All the while you fell all over girls you never knew
Cause I've done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think it's gonna hurt me for a long long time

Wait for the day
You'll go away
Knowing that you warned me of the price I'd have to pay
And life's full of flaws
Who knows the cause?
Living in the memory of a love that never was
Cause I've done everything I know to try and change your mind
and I think I'm gonna miss you for a long long time
Cause I've done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think I'm gonna love you for a long long time.

9. violent femmes and... public enemy?
I had a fling with a guy who ended up moving to Arizona with his girlfriend-soon-to-be-wife. I was real hung up on him, and had just purchased Public Enemy's 1991 album.

And so the song "By The Time I Get To Arizona" was my breakup song all summer. At least it didn't make me cry...

Angel, of the morning.

Be that angel who loved and flew away with a smile.

Let it go. "We had a time, that's all anybody gets," as I told my ex of 25 years ago. You can cry for two years, and I did, but in the end you'll wonder why you wasted so much time feeling bad about anything in the prime of your life. Life is short, turn around and you're 30. Blink and AARP is stalking you. Oversleep, and your parents are 80.

19. I was gonna suggest "Kiss Off"
don't know if that was the Violent Femmes song you were thinking of.

If you REALLY want to put yourself in a bad post-break-up mood, try the Police's "Can't Stand Long You," followed up in a week or so by "So Lonely."

I guess it depends on what kind of mood you want to wallow in.

Good luck, Fenris!

16. Soft Cell - Say Hello, Wave Goodbye
Standing at the door of the Pink Flamingo, crying in the rain
It was a kind of so-so love and I'm gonna make sure it never happens again
You and I, it had to be the standing joke of the year
You were a sleeparound, a lost-and-found, and not for me I fear

I tried to make it work, you in a cocktail skirt, and me in a suit, well it just wasn't me
You're used to worry-less and now your life's a mess, so insecure you see
I put up with all the scenes and this is one scene thats gonna be played my way

Take your hands off me
I don't belong to you, you see
Take a look at my face for the last time
I never knew you, you never knew me
Say hello, goodbye
Say hello, wave goodbye

Under the deep red light, I can see the make-up sliding down
Hey little girl, you will always make-up, so take off that unbecoming frown
What about me? Well, I'll find someone that's not going cheap in the sales
A nice little housewife, who'll give me a steady life and won't keep going off the rails

Take your hands off me
I don't belong to you, you see
Take a look at my face for the last time
I never knew you, you never knew me
Say hello, goodbye
Say hello, wave goodbye

We've been involved for quite a while now, and to keep you a secret, it has been hell
We're strangers meeting for the first time, ok? Just smile and say hello...

Say hello, then wave goodbye
Say hello, then wave goodbye
Say hello, then wave goodbye
Say hello, then wave goodbye
Say hello, wave goodbye
Say hello, then wave goodbye
Say hello, say goodbye
Goodbye...

17. Love Will F'n Tear Us Apart
When routine bites hard
And ambitions are low
And resentment rides high
But emotions won't grow
And we're changing our ways, taking different roads
Then love, love will tears us apart again
Love, love will tears us apart again

Why is the bedroom so cold
You've turned away on your side
Is my timing that flawed?
Our respect run so dry
Yet there's still this appeal that we've kept through our lives
But love, love will tears us apart again
Love, love will tear us apart again

You cry out in your sleep
All my failings exposed
And there's a taste in my mouth
As desperation takes hold
Just that something so good just can't function no more
But love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear us apart again

Without You

No, I can't forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that's just the way the story goes
You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows
Yes, it shows

No, I can't forget tomorrorow
When I think of all my sorrows
When I had you there but then I let you go
And now it's only fair that I should let you know
What you should know

I can't live if living is without you
I can't live, I can't give any more
Can't live if living is without you
I can't give, I can't give any more

No, I can't forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that's just the way the story goes
You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows
Yes, it shows

Can't live if living is without you
I can't live, I can't give anymore
I can't live if living is without you
Can't live, I can't give anymore
(Living is without you)

24. "People Ain't No Good"
by Nick Cave. Anger at one person? All well and good, but global anger? Now we're cooking with gas! Besides, it's so gorgeously restrained that it wouldn't have been out of place on one of Sinatra's late-Fifties bustup albums...

People just ain't no good
I think that's welll understood
You can see it everywhere you look
People just ain't no good

We were married under cherry trees
Under blossoms we made our vows
All the blossoms come sailing down
Through the streets and through the playgrounds

The sun would stream on the sheets
Woken by the morning birds
We'd buy the Sunday newspapers
And never breathe a single word

People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good

The seasons came, the seasons went
The winter stripped the blossoms bare
A different tree now lines the streets
Shaking its fists in the air
The winter slammed us like a fist
The windows rattling in the gales
To which she drew the curtains down
Made out of her wedding veils

People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good at all

To our love send a dozen white lilies
To our love send a rough cross of wood
To our love let all the pink-eyed pigeons coo
That people they just ain't no good
To our love send back all your letters
To our love a valentine of blood
To our love let all the jaded lovers cry
That people they just ain't no good

It ain't that in their hearts they're bad
They can comfort you, some even try
They nurse you when you're ill of health
They bury you when you go and die
It ain't that in their hearts they're bad
They'd stick by you if they could
But that's just bullshit, baby
People just ain't no good

People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good at all

26. For humor, there's Weird Al's "One More Minute"
...which contains the classic line, "I'd rather clean all the bathrooms in Grand Central Station with my tongue than spend one more minute with you."

In fact, maybe you should just get some comedy CDs and/or VHS tapes and DVDs to assist you in this. You probably need to laugh as much as anything else, and I'd say that's always true in grief. I've never needed a good laugh more than when I was in pain over a death or separation.

On the other hand, if you want to cry it out, try:

The Band's version of "The Great Pretender," as well as their take on "Share Your Love with Me," both on "Moondog Matinee."

Also try "It Makes No Difference," another of their greats. Raw, naked emotion from Rick Danko.

If you're feeling a little vengeful, there's John Gorka's "Up Until Then" (On "Out of the Valley"), which is about a woman who gets dumped one time too many. Don't listen to it if you think men are treated too harshly by society (That's another thread).

27. How have we missed Greg Kihn?
Hell - he wrote "The Break-up Song". I'm listenting to it as I type, actually. (Only because I'm listening to an 80's compilation)

"They just don't write 'em like that anymore..."

Another excellent song from the 80's that I used to listen to after having my heart ripped out with a rusty spoon was "All of My Heart" by ABC. A bit syrupy, but the lyrics were reasonably intelligent, and fit the occasion when I felt a little down.

Well, Jim Steinman, actually. But Meat's over-the-top emoting is crucial to bringing Steinman's over-the-top masterpieces to life...

classic line:

But there ain't no Coupe DeVille
Hiding at the bottom of a Cracker Jack box."

29. "Your Dictionary" - XTC
Not all that mopey, but lots of spit and venom. Andy's song about his first wife.

H-A-T-E
Is that how you spell "love" in your dictionary?
K-I-C-K
Pronounced as kind
F-*-C-K
Is that how you spell "friend" in your dictionary?
Black on black
A guidebook for the blind

Well now that I can see my eyes won't weep
Now that I can hear your song sounds cheap
Now that I can talk all your corn I'll reap
I'm not so sure that Joey wed a Virgin Mary
There are no words for me inside your dictionary

S-L-A-P
Is that how you spell "kiss" in your dictionary?
C-O-L-D
Pronounced as care
S-H-*-T
Is that how you spelt "me" in your dictionary?
Four-eyed fool
You led 'round everywhere

Now that I can see it's the queens new clothes
Now that I can hear all your poison prose
Now that I can talk with my tongue unfroze
I'm not so sure of Santa or the buck-tooth fairy
There are no words for me inside your dictionary

Now your laughter has a hollow ring
But the hollow ring has no finger in
So let's close the book and let the day begin
And our marriage be undone

30. Quittin' Time
from Mary Chapin Carpenter

Hey baby tell me what we're gonna do
It's getting crazy and I need some help from you
We were so connected that you were a part of me
Now I feel an emptiness right to the heart of me

But you pretend and I pretend
That everything is fine
And though we should be at an end
It's so hard admittin'
When it's quittin' time

Hey baby I'm running out of things to say
Please don't hate me this feeling just won't go away
Now we're spending all out time caught in a fantacy
Just trying to keep in mind the way it used to be

But you pretend and I pretend
That everything is fine
And though we should be at an end
It's so hard admittin'
When it's quittin' time

31. "Letting Go" by Squeeze
She plaits her hair, i bite my nails
We balance love on the scales
I wind the clock and go to bed
Our love is hanging on a thread
She gets undressed, i undress too
The draft is cold in my bedroom
We cuddle up and say goodnight
It's all the love there is tonight.
I can't be brave enough
She cannot say what we're feeling
Day after day
We're going through the motions
We find it hard to let each other go

She boils the eggs, i make the tea
Outside the sun shines on the street
We're at that point here love has gone
The fuse is lit, it won't be long
I take a walk, she cleans the house
This is the end, i'm in no doubt
But neither one of us can show
The slightest sign of letting go

33. "The Famous Final Scene", Bob Seger
A number of years ago when I had a painful breakup, I wrote an article about breaking up (for my journalism class) and I used the lyrics to that song as the lead-in to the article. I was never a big Seger fan, but that song got to me.

For a more fun take on things, "Love Stinks" by the J Geils Band.

I think I'm giving away my age here with these old tunes. :-)

"I Don't Care About You"

Down on South Street Philadelphia,
Out from Avenue C,
I seen it in the eyes
it was ready to freeze
from the valley hotel!

I don't care about you!
Fuck you!
I don't care about you!
Fuck you!

I see Hollywood boulevard,
welfare hotel,
I spent the night in jail,
near the Wicox hotel!

I don't care about you!
Fuck you!
I don't care about you!

I've seen an old man have a heart attack in Manhattan.
Well he just died while we just stood there lookin' at him.
Ain't he cute?

I don't care about you!
Ohhhhhhhhh!
I don't care about you!

I see man rollin' drunks,
bodies the streets.
Some man was sleepin' in puke
and a man with no legs crawling down 5th street trying to get something to eat!

I don't care about you!
Oh noooooo!!
I don't care about you!
Fuck you!
I don't care about you!
Hey! Hey!
I don't care about you!

--------------------
"Liar for Hire"

you lie, you love to lie. bull and brag, screw around

chorus: liar for hire-do anything. liar for hire-use anything. liar for hire-do anything. liar for hire.

get out, get out, gotta get you out. get you out of here, get rid of you. nobody wants you, nobody needs you, nobody's gonna die for you. nobody wants you, nobody needs you, nobody's gonna die or you (chorus)

backwards: jerry falwell eats shit at the foot of the devil and loves it! you just cut, cut yourself off, you don't count, count anymore. you were a friend, i trusted you, i trusted you, trust no more (chorus)

36. Or, "A Song for Europe" - Roxy Music
Here as I sit, At this empty cafe,
Thinking of you

I remember
All those moments, Lost in wonder
That we´ll never, Find again

Though the world Is my oyster
It´s only a shell Full of memories
And here by the Seine Notre-Dame casts A long lonely shadow

Now - only sorrow No tomorrow
There´s no today for us Nothing is there
For us to share But yesterday

These cities may change But there always remains
My obsession
Through silken waters My gondola glides
And the bridge - it sighs ...

I remember
All those moments Lost in wonder
That we´ll never Find again

There´s no more time for us
Nothing is there For us to share
But yesterday

Aren't break-up songs fun!! How depressing. I think I'm gonna go jump off of the Lake Street Bridge now.

Not Tonight

Do you remember all the things you said to me?
You made em sound so simple but they're just not that easy
And you swear that I could be someone
Hold you for all time
Baby, not tonight...

And I tried to tell you now that I can't find those words
And I tried to show you how that it's pain you don't deserve
And you're sitting there and asking
You can come inside
Baby, not tonight...

And take a look at what we've become
A tragedy but I can't find that love
That we started with so long ago
And I know this isn't right
It's the last time I'll be kissing you...
So good night.
Good night.

This is gonna hurt me now much more than it hurts you
A sad ol' cliche is slowly turning true
You can tell me something's wrong and ask
Can we talk a while?
Baby, not tonight...

And take a look at what we've become
A tragedy but I can't find that love
That we started with so long ago
And I know this isn't right
It's the last time I'll be kissing you...
So good night.
Good night.

We're driving home and you can see this in my eyes
You're starting to tear up, you see straight through my disguise
And we're leaning so much closer
Holdin' on so tight
It's the last time I'll be kissing you...
So good night.

39. Megadeth Liar - quoted from memory no less
start trouble, spread pain
piss and venom in your veins

talk nasty, breathe fire
smell rotten you're liar

sweat liquor, breathe snot
eat garbage, spit blood

diseased, health hazard
scum bag, filthy bastard

greasy face, teeth decayed
hair matted, drunk all day

abscessed, sunken veins
rot gut, scrambled brains

steal money, crash cars
rob jewelry, hock guitars

rot in hell, it's time you know
to your master, off you go!

ah, high school memories

40. Letter to Elise
And any number of other songs by The Cure, for that matter. But that one's my favorite. And I'm not as much of a fan as I used to be, but Black by Pearl Jam is still a great song.

Course, if you really want cry-in-your-beer bawl-like-a-baby music, you can't beat country. The old stuff, like Silver Wings and Today I Started Loving you Again by Haggard, or Last Thing I Needed First Thing this Morning and I'm Still not Over You by Willie Nelson, or Cold Cold Heart and I'm so Lonesome I could Cry by Hank Williams.

I've always find that a little bit of wallowing in my own self-pity helps. I hope this isn't too hard for you and that it passes quickly.

Oh, wait, there was Morrissey.

I guess it's up to the listener to determine who was more bleak.

If you're not listening to The Smiths, it's not that bad of a breakup.
******************************************************************
I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
'Cause you're evil
And you lie
And if you should die
I may feel slightly sad
(But I won't cry)

Loved and lost
And some may say
When usually it's Nothing
Surely you're happy
It should be this way ?
I say "No, I'm gonna kill my dog"
And : "May the lines sag, may the lines sag heavy and deep tonight"

I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
'Cause you're evil
And you lie
And if you should die
I may feel slightly sad
(But I won't cry)

Loved and lost
And some may say
When usually it's Nothing
Surely you're happy
It should be this way ?
I said "No"
And then I shot myself
So, drink, drink, drink
And be ill tonight

From the one you left behind
From the one you left behind
From the one you left behind
From the one you left behind
Behind
Behind
Behind
Behind
Behind
Behind
Oh, unhappy birthday
Behind
Behind
Behind

Lots of good sad 80's breakup songs, but the best ever has simply got to be

"I Will Survive" by Diana Ross

Is there really any competition at all?

I like "Always something there to remind me" by Naked Eyes from the 80s

45. Paul Simon - 50 ways to leave your lover
This one about sent me over the edge way back many years ago when a long time boyfriend broke up with me for somebody else:

Lyrics:

"The problem is all inside your head", she said to me
The answer is easy if you take it logically
I'd like to help you in your struggle to be free
There must be fifty ways to leave your lover

She said it's really not my habit to intrude
Furthermore, I hope my meaning won't be lost or misconstrued
But I'll repeat myself at the risk of being crude
There must be fifty ways to leave your lover
Fifty ways to leave your lover

Just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

Just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just listen to me
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

She said it grieves me so to see you in such pain
I wish there was something I could do to make you smile again
I said I appreciate that and would you please explain
About the fifty ways

She said why don't we both just sleep on it tonight
And I believe in the morning you'll begin to see the light
And then she kissed me and I realized she probably was right
There must be fifty ways to leave your lover
Fifty ways to leave your lover

Just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just listen to me
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

47. Chris Isaak, Wicked Game
The world was on fire and no one could save me but you
Its strange what desire will make foolish people do
I never dreamed that I´d meet somebody like you
I never dreamed that I´d lose somebody like you
Chorus :
I don't wanna fall in love no (This world is only gonna break your heart )
I don't wanna fall in love (This world is only gonna break your heart )
with you...with you (This world is only gonna break your heart )
What a wicked game to play , to make me feel this way
What a wicked thing to do, to let me dream of you
What a wicked thing to say, you never felt this way
What a wicked thing to do, to make me dream of you
Chorus :
I don't wanna fall in love no (This world is only gonna break your heart )
I don't wanna fall in love (This world is only gonna break your heart )
with you
The world was on fire and no one could save me but you
Its strange what desire will make foolish people do
I never dreamed that I´d love somebody like you
I never dreamed that I´d lose somebody like you
Chorus :
No I don't wanna fall in love
No I don't wanna fall in love
With you...with you
Nobody else loves no one

The lyrics look stoopid. The song is great - as much anger in the music as the lyrics. Texas psych fromt he 60's but still sounds good today. Always a favorite for me when my heart was broken, seemed to work real well for the breakup at the start of High Fidelity

You're Gonna Miss Me
Oh yeah!
Ahh!
You're gonna wake up one morning as the sun greets the dawn.
You're gonna wake up one morning as the sun greets the dawn.
You're gonna look around in your mind, girl, you're gonna find that
I'm gone.
You didn't realize,
You didn't realize,
You didn't realize,
You didn't realize,
You didn't realize.
Oh! you're gonna miss me, baby.
Oh! you're gonna miss me, baby.
Oh! you're gonna miss me, child, yeah, yeah.
I gave you the warning,
But you never heeded it.
How can you say you miss my lovin,
When you never needed it?
Yeah! Yeah! Ow!
You're gonna wake up wonderin',
Find yourself all alone,
But what's gonna stop me, baby?
I'm not comin' home.
I'm not comin' home.
I'm not comin' home.
Oh, oh, oh, yeah

49. Crazy by Patsy Cline
Crazy,
I'm crazy for feeling so lonely
I'm crazy, crazy for feeling so blue
I knew you'd love me as long as you wanted
And then someday you'd leave me for somebody new.
Worry, why do I let myself worry?
Wonderin', what in the world did I do?
Crazy for thinking that my love could hold you
I'm crazy for trying and crazy for crying
And I'm crazy for loving you.
Crazy for thinking that my love could hold you
I'm crazy for trying and crazy for crying
And I'm crazy for loving you.

55. Classic Ronstadt
Well I spent my whole lifetime
In a world where the sunshine
Finds excuses for not hangin' 'round
I squandered emotions
On the slightest of notions
And the first easy loving I found
But soon all the good times
The gay times and play times
Like colors run together and fade
Oh Lord if you hear me
Touch me and hold me
And keep me from blowing away

There's times when I trembled
When my mind remembered
The days that just crumbled away
With nothing to show
But these lines that I know
Are beginning to show in my face

Oh Lord if you're listening
I know I'm no Christian
And I ain't got much coming to me
So send down some sunshine
Throw out your lifeline
And keep me from blowing away

Oh Lord if you hear me
Touch me and hold me
And keep me from blowing away

56. and one from Bette Middler
You'd never recognize the room.
The pictures all have different frames now.
And all the chairs are rearranged now.
Somehow, I've thrown out every souvenir.
Yes, there've been changes made
since you stayed here.

You'd never recognize the street.
The neighbor's kids play different games now.
The colors in the trees have changed now.
Strange how I've hardly thought of you this year.
Yes, there've been changes made since you stayed here.

The same address, the more or less.
More happens, less matters, I guess.

You'd never recognize my life.
The party-givers know my name now.
And when I cry it's not the same now.
Somehow, I never waste a single tear.
Yes, there've been changes made
since you stayed here.

You'd never recognize the room.
You'd never recognize . . .

67. Classic-er Ronstadt Break-Up Song: Different Drum
You and I, travel to the beat of a different drum
Oh can't you tell by the way I run
Evertime you make eyes at me
You cry and moan and say it will work out
But honey child I've got my doubts
You can't see the forest for the trees

Oh don't get me wrong
It's not that I knock it
It's just that I'm not in the market
For a boy who wants to love only me
Yes and I ain't saying you ain't pretty
All I'm sayin's that I'm not ready
For any person, place or thing
To try and pull the reins in on me

So goodbye, I'll be leavin' I see no sense
In this crying and grieving
We'll both live a lot longer, if you live without me

Things I Cannot Change
(Jaime Hanna, Dennis Britt and Alan Miller)

Leaves fall in the cool October air
Days grow short and I can't remember
Where I saw you last
Turned against the summerlight
Walking off on that final August night
I was there on my knees all alone

In a world where nothing ever stays the same
I am left with only things I cannot change
You're gone away
And left me things I cannot change

Smoke will rise and the fire always burns
Sands will drift and tides will turn
And I can't wrestle with the sea
Rearrange the sky or fight against the wind
Anymore than I can bring you back to me

In a world where nothing ever stays the same
I am left with only things I cannot change
You're gone away
And left me things I cannot change

So far away and left me things I cannot change
Left me things I cannot change
Left me things I cannot change
=========================

The greatest pains are caused by things one cannot change...
