Poke Fun If You Want... But I Often Buy Clothes At Thrift Stores
There's some great bargains to be found. Some of the stuff has NEVER been worn and still has the original tags on it.

Goodwill, Salvation Army, Purple Heart... each one sort of specializes in better "departments" (depending on the neighborhood the store is located in), so I regularly visit all three just to see what's new.

And unless I had admitted it here (or actually pointed out what I've bought at a thrift store) you would never be able to tell the difference.

It is a sensible thing to do. I shop there often. You can get great buys on children's clothes. They outgrow clothes so fast it is a bargain. They are in good condition. Ours even has furniture and you can get good deals on that too--a chest or table that only needs a coat of paint. You are smart to shop there.

5. Every one I kno w who has children do it.
Not a thing wrong, I grew up in a well off family and we had someone make our clothing for years. My mother said we got just what we wanted and it was cheaper. Everyone laughed at us. But then we were also laughted at because we were made to go to the dentist twice a year.

7. I buy more than clothes there...
I buy housewares (cooking stuff, pots, pans, etc). The clothes I buy tend to be t-shirts I can wear to the gym and ruin, but that says more about the quality of the clothing I seem to find, rather than my unwillingness to buy it. I have a tie I got a Goodwill that I wear all the time.

So, no poking fun here - ya gotta save a buck when you can!

at the number of DC dems who brag about their $1 silk ties from thrift shops. they may be forced to dress like *, but they'd rather feed their families than spend $ on stupid ties.

I draw the line at used underwear, preferring jc penney's there, but I'd go naked if I couldn't buy used stuff. For what a pair of slacks costs new I can buy four or five used pair, some never worn.

All my silk shirts come from thrift stores. You'd be surprised at what people donate. Some of it's new, some is only "gently worn" as they say. All of it is in good condition.

Nothing beats having nice things to wear AND money in the bank. B-)

I have a real vintage clothes fetish so it's only natural
that I buy just about all my clothes at thrift stores. Going into a thrift store, smelling that old stuff smell, totally gets my adrenaline pumping. Trying to find that gem in the rough is one of my true joys.

and have for over ten yrs.(that's not syaing much though,cause i hate to shop and rarely do i do it.)

twice in those ten yrs i can remember buying from a department store and those were for shoes and under-clothing.

it is good to do for many reasons-reduce reuse recycle
cheaper
and the money spent goes to help others.

18. Thrift shopping is the best!
I tend to get a lot of my furnishings and clothing at thrift stores -- I tend to like unusual, vintage items so those stores can offer me amazing gems at great prices.

My one problem is the local Salvation Amry store I have been going to four 20+ years is located in a newly-trendy neighborhood and their prices are starting to reflect that the young/hip now shop there. No more 50 cent sweaters -- I'm looking at $5-7 minimum. Pisses me off.

I also tend to visit thrift places in smaller communities -- you can find amazing stuff at outrageous prices.

Unfortunately, since I moved to this area, I've found very few thrift stores, and the ones I know of stock very little.

There are consignment shops catering to a more upscale clientele, but I haven't really tried those yet.

I get most of my family's clothing at Value Village. I buy lots of used books too. There are certain things I won't buy at thrift stores, namely underwear and lingerie. I am also leery about buying used shoes, especially for adults.

With a 3 year old, thrift and consignment stores are the best for books, toys, clothes.

I do a lot of crafts too and they are great for those items.

There is a place close by where books are 3 paperbacks for 25 cents and 2 hardbacks for 50 cents. A toy that's $20 new will be $1. Picture frames are a couple of dollars. It's great!

about buying gently used clothes...just have them cleaned.
Recycles...they're bargains and you don't support sweat shop inequities.

I don't shop at thrift stores. I like my clothes new. (Dealing with the devil, I admit. Most new clothes in the U.S. are made by underage, underpaid slaves in the third world. Total guilt situation.)
But I always donate the old ones to Goodwill.

If you're a size 33W/32L in jeans or a 17/33 in an oxford shirt or size 13 shoes...if so, then I might be wearing your stuff.

25. Love thrift shops! Wearing a thrift shop dress now!
I'm not a "clothes person," but it's neat to find an originally-expensive, designer-label sweater and tell everyone at work who compliments it I paid 99 cents for something that must have cost at least $50 new.

And housewares too! My latest find was wineglasses. In my house they get broken often so I don't mind paying 75 cents a stem and having the "shabby chic" of mismatched glasses because when they get broken it's no big deal, plus I get to go back to the thrift shop and buy some more stuff!

26. Thrift shops are our friends....especially when you have two children
who grow by the hour(used children's clothing is so amazingly new because they only wear for 5 seconds) and a teenage daughter who has to wear something different every few hours. I also love buying used kitchen stuff, that I would never pay full price for.

...I don't even know what clothes at regular retailers cost these days. Where other people might brag about how expensive something they are wearing was, I find myself bragging about how *little* I've paid for something.

used to be my favorite shopping experience when i was around 18, 30 years ago. this was in 1973 and me and my best bud would find tons of old clothes from the 50's and 60's, beaded sweaters, dresses, shoes even. we had a blast doing this, but i don't do it now...when you can buy new (casual) clothes at suzie's deals for 5 bucks, it just doesn't make sense anymore.

(and no, i don't work there or own stock!!)
