Fossil hunt: Diggers getting warm in long summer's work

RUDYARD — A dozen of them are gathered here, men and women covered in dust and sweat, working around an excavation site carved from the side of a coulee.

They are scholars, museum curators, paleontologists and grad students who spend their summers digging through mountains of rock and dirt in search of the ultimate prey: dinosaurs. Together they endure blistering heat and mind-numbing boredom. They sleep in tents and cook food in a camper. They share hot weather during the day and cold beer at night, and a little bit of themselves with each other and with the land they work.

They wake before dawn and labor for hours armed with little more than ice picks and paintbrushes. They struggle against time, heat and dehydration, and they do it because they love their jobs. Some earn a minimal salary, but most work for nothing more than the satisfaction of being part of the team.

THis was an great article! 78 million years ago WOW! What's it like to observe something that old haveing been covered in perpetuity until now? I have been to museums to see fossils, but I imagine the energy around an actual FIND is much different than fathoming it after it's been reconstructed.

That is totally cool. I definitely want to be a paleontologist or archeologist when I grow up. At least, that's what I keep telling my 12-year-old daughter. Maybe when she leaves for college...!

I was thinking about you a few weeks age when I met
this 10 year old really knowledgable about dinos and fossils.

Sounds like a great project.

I am getting married in about 2 weeks, and have been back in Bozeman for a while. The crew takes Fridays off for "town day" and we catch up on email at the public library in Havre. I think I posted to DU once the whole time I was there LOL, definately not enough time to keep up.
