1. Just downloaded "The New Year"
Just one question; where's the intensity? I'm about to fall asleep here.

4. WTF is "emo"?
I've always wondered this - I see "emo" clothes, hear about "emo" music - etc, but I have no frigging idea what "emo" IS.

This must be the thread to ask - and I must be getting old, because I've been trying to figure this out for a couple of years.

TIA for the education!

10. OK... one man's review
"The New Year":
Laid down a nice, atmospheric groove, but the vocalist sounds too much like every other "emo/pop/punk" singer coming out of Orange County. If there was a touch of attitude anywhere in this song I'd think about buying it.

"Title and Registration":
The first lines of the lyrics almost made me stop listening to it. Thankfully, he got a little deeper later in the song. Same problem with the vocals and lack of attitude.

All in all, a couple listenable tunes, but implying that these guys are rock's new messiahs is a huge stretch.

19. Note
They're from Seattle, not Orange County (which is responsible for some music that's simply atrocious).

22. Yeah....
I remember seeing flyers for them around town. I should look up the names of the members and see if I've done any shows with them in the past....anyway.. I was just saying he had that sort of "O.C. sound".... and, we definitely agree on the quality of music coming from that area.... damn....:puke:

14. Really don't find them all that impressive.
Kinda like Superchunk with wimpier vocals. And Superchunk's vocals were REALLY wimpy.

I always find it odd when all of a sudden there's this band or this artist who everybody (critics, word of mouth, promotioanl departments at record labels, etc.) just kinda rallies around all at once and elevates to the point of dietyhood...and they've done nothing to deserve it, IMHO. The first one was Springsteen...then it was U2 in the 80's....Then Beck in the 90's. The last few years, we've been subjected to all these hypes, and nobody eveer steps back and looks at what they're hyping to see if it's really worthy or not. For inst, DCFC is not doing anything I haven't heard zillions of sensitive white indie boys do thousands of times already, and the previous ones were better at it, too. However, were you to look at CMJ or Spin or any other "cool" barometers in the music world, DCFC is some sort of second coming of the Beatles. Why is that? Have any of those people never heard Superchunk or Mineral or Jawbreaker or Modest Mouse or the Shins before? Or are they on somebody's payroll? (No; Yes.)

There IS a lot of great modern rock being made, but DCFC is decidely mediocre, in my book. The Shins are a MUCH better bet.

Love the vocals, love the hooks, love the atmospherics. Thought the other artists you mentioned deserved praise, too. So there. :-)

16. Shake hands?
You bet. Remember, I'm not dissing you, I'm just expressing how I feel about a certain band..... I'm glad you didn't take it personally.

My question is: Whatever happened to Lotion? Similar band, superior in just about every way, put out three amazing CD's, then disappeared. Thomas Pynchon wrote the liner notes to one of their CDs. I miss those guys. When I hear DCFC, I hear echoes of Lotion all over the place.
