in Yokosuka 52 to 55. I have a friend living in Sasebo. He has plenty of good information. I am interested in first hand (Hands on) air travel, air lines, cost etc. from US to Tokyo or Sasebo.

And if by some weird miracle I can scrape the money together, I'll go in May, but it doesn't look too good at this point. :-(

My recommendation for airlines is All Nippon Airways (ANA), which flies out of SF, LA, and NY. They have the best leg room in coach and the sweetest, most helpful flight attendants.

Get a Japan Rail Pass. If you go from Tokyo to Kyushu and back and take some sidetrips, it will pay for itself, especially if you're there for only a week. You have to buy it in the States. Get it validated at Narita and take the NEXT train to Tokyo Station and points beyond.

They have excellent information, PDF files on specific destinations, and links to sites of economy hotel groups.

If you want J-style accommodations, try the Japan Inn Group. If you want Western-style, every city in the country has so-called "business hotels" in the center of town.
