Poll question: How many people have you got on "DU Ignore"?
Edited on Mon Aug-11-03 12:28 PM by Atlant
(Adding option 8 and 9)

I used to have just one person on my DU "Ignore" list.
But lately, as I've found it getting harder and harder
to read DU without screaming at my computer, I've decided
that, rather than just wander off again, I'll add a few
more folks to my "ignore" list. (Luckily, they've tended
to congregate in a few notes so it's been easy.)

So, how many people do you have on your ignore list?

(Extra credit essay question: Is it increasing, staying
about the same, or decreasing)?

1. Option #1 with reservations.
Not because I'm open to all positions all the time but because there ARE occasions when I have found myself agreeing with and admiring points made by people who usually drive me up the wall.

8. I'm the same with one addition
I have put several people on my ignore list for a couple of days as a "cooling off period".

I always go back and remove them, but have found utilizing this feature to simply cease the flamefests is a good thing.

Like Walt, I use it as a cooling off device, but most all of them are gone by the time I cool off!
The few others have learned to tone it down... :eyes:

I usually don't ever take names off my ignore list, so it can only increase. Some of the names I put there I think were freepers anyway, so they might have been tombstoned. I admit sometimes I'm a bit cold-blooded, but it works for me.

99. I see why that may be true in many cases...
...but I don't think that can be true in every case. There is one person I sometimes put on my ignore list because the person spams the boards with nonsense. I put him/her on ignore from time to time just to get a cleaner view of the messages. I don't see how that make me a closed minded sissy.

104. I ignore lot of people
because I am very sensitive. I don't
like bad language or bad attitude or
bad tone of voice. That is why I have to
crush lot of people in my movies, only people
that smerk or look sour. I do not care what
anybody says but don't be a little sourpuss.
Also I put the media on ignore. Look at it.
It wants to hurt my feelings. It forgets
I put my $5000 trousers on their legs
just like I do mine.

11. I've never used the "ignore" feature, and I doubt I ever will.
There are plenty of folks here whose views I vehemently disagree with. However, I've never felt a need to totally close myself off from any exposure to their -- imho -- utter idiocy and/or depravity.

I'll confront and dispute their premises on occasion (if I'm in the mood), otherwise I simply pay no attention to their posts.

27. Question for those who use ignore
on the view on the forum front page - do you see the total number of posts on a thread? Or only the total number of "Viewable" (to you) posts on a thread? And does the thread look funky (like things are missing)?

But some posts in the "threaded" table of contents are replaced by
"ignored". Then, down below, among the individual replies, these
"ignored" psosts simply don't show at all.

So on the thread display you see a line where a post is with "ignore" marking an ignored post. How does one see the ignored post (can you click it? Do you have to figure out who it is from to know who to temprorarily unignore?)

Even if I did so chose to use the ignore - I think this would drive me batty. Like the one time in high school I decided to read the cliff notes - and after two chapters felt that I was missing far too much stuff and went back to the original book.

There's no easy way to read an ignored post that I
know of; I wish there were.

You can log-out, or launch a browser where you
haven't got a cookie remembering that you're
logged-in. In that case, the server certainly won't
use your "ignore" list as it doesn't know who
you are, so no one will be ignored.

if somebody responds to the post of a poster

will appear. Clear as mud?

If you click on the blue thingy that the visible post is responding to, you won't get anything if it's a post by someone on ignore.

The only way you could read ignored posts is to take the person off ignore.

... that's how I knew it was a response to someone I had on ignore.

And how could it work? If the person is on ignore their posts shouldn't be showing up when you link in the thread - so you don't have a post to "go" to.

Sorry, just don't see how that's possible.

I just tried it; if you've done a "View All" on the thread
and you click on the "reply to xx" link pointing back
to an ignored post, nothing happens.

I could imagine that it would work if you're viewing
posts "singly" (in other words, you haven't done a
"View All"). But there's no simple way back from
"View All" view back to "singleton" view, is there?

But it does work in "Singleton" mode; I just tried it.
Of course, this means this approach won't work until
a thread has become large enough to offer "View All"
versus "Singleton" mode; before that, all views are in
"View All" mode.

Thanks for the hint!

86. You are correct!
It only works on non-All View.
I "Mark" the posts & on a long thread
use single view---the new posts stand
out, and it loads faster.

28. None. Never. Part of the point is to be part of a community
That means the "good" and the "bad". It's often more important to let your adversaries know you're part of the community, if for nothing else, to let them know that you're not exclusive. How are you going to win over someone if you remind them that you will dismiss them should your viewpoint ever hold sway?

I also just like to see how different minds work.

Life shouldn't just be a shrill and constant performance to convince everyone how "correct" you are; it should be a constant attempt at cameraderie, engagement and influence.

People who need to be correct all the time are tiresome and inherently wrong.

30. Not ignoring by disagreement, but convenience
Opinions people may not agree with may make them angry, but certainly doesn't make them wrong, or not worth hearing.

I just have one poster blocked who posts essentially the same discussion over and over again in the same thread, so the Ignore feature makes it easier to read these threads, and considerably reduces the page loading time.

44. I don't let people who irritate me scream at me in my living room
and I see no reason to permit it on my computer, either. As soon as I determine someone has nothing of value or entertainment to add to any conversation, they're gone. I was working on probably the world's longest ignore list before the changeover, when I lost the entire list. Upon reviewing DU without Ignore on, I was reminded of why I used it in the first place and started rebuilding the list.

but to tell the truth, even those few who bug me sometimes, do say or post something that does interest me. So, if I intentionally ignore someone, I am only hurting or alienating myself. I pick and chose threads and posts as I go along when I read the forums.

A good deal of the time, I wish there was a way to officially ignore certain types of threads in General Discussion - oh, that would be sooo nice!

If anyone has me on ignore, well, they aren't missing much.

72. I have one
as of a couple weeks ago. Like a dummy I responded to an email from a member through email instead of through DU. It was innocuous at first but when I said something she didn't agree with she proceeded to hound me and insult me after I repeatedly told her I wasn't going to argue with her and to leave me alone. She wouldn't take no for an answer and started flaming me in my own home and calling me a bitch with other choice and hostile language.

So I blocked her email address, and had to put her on Ignore so she couldn't use DU messages to keep harrassing me. It's not that I want to shield myself from her posts on DU - she wants to have a private pissing contest and I refuse to participate. She won't take NO for an answer.

I don't feel like I miss anything by not seeing her posts. But what do I know - I don't see them, LOL! The trade off is worth it under the circumstances.

Linda

It would be interesting to correlate the answers (as to whether or
not you ignore people) with the age of the respondants. Some of us
have heard it all (or most of it) 'way too many times already to
believe that everyone has an opinion worth listening to (yet again).

After a while, you learn to recognize the same old shite as soon as
you've heard the first few words of it.

93. I don't think age has much to do with it
more style and patience/tolerance and I don't know what.

What "age" would you suggest would be more likely to ignore?

Given the poll results this answer would suggest that 74% of DUers (at least among those likely to respond to the poll) fall into this "age" category (younger? older? ???)

My first guess would be "older would be more-likely to set
someone on ignore".

I'd further guess that there's little correlation in which
age group(s) GETS ignored.

97. How old is older?
Don't consider myself a spring chicken by anymeans. From the looks of the responses, others I believe to be in my age category follow suit (not using ignore).

I don't think there is a correlation (given the distribution on the poll - only 26% use ignore of those responding.) If the distribution of responses were more spread out (think of a scatter chart) then perhaps - but the responses are primarily lumped in one category.

of people because all I need to see is four
or five words to know if I will get anything
out of it. I can close my eyes and sniff the
post on the screen to see if they have what it
takes, or if they are in danger and I could
help them. My intuition is very powerful. I trust
it like a club of old women.

You are on a forum that stops about half the population from posting (all right of the fence). If you still can't stand other peoples stances on issues to the point that you need to ignore them something is wrong with you IMHO.

101. I think that would be an interesting feature.
> The question should be "how many have YOU on 'ignore'?

I think that should be a part of the personal data that at least
the OWNER of a DU account should able to access. You know:

"You're being ignored by 5 out of 31,034 registered users"

or

"You're being ignored by 31,035 out of 31,034 registered users"

Why not submit that over in "Bugs/Features"?
