Where was Poppy when Reagan was shot ?
I was watching a snip from 'The Day Reagan Was Shot' on Shotime at lunch, and from what they 'portrayed' - the Deputy Press Sec'y was giving out shitty info ("I dunno, I dunno"), which is what caused Al Haig to claim 'I'm in charge here'.

From the script, Haig reamed the guy and said that Baker (James, of Florida Recount 2000 fame) was 'running things from the hospital' where Reagan was being operated on.

Where the Fark was the Vice President ?

Edited on Mon Aug-11-03 01:12 PM by LuLu550
He was in the hospital getting operated on, I guess. I remember seeing them parade him to a window afterwards to let us know he was OK.

15. I stand corrected
Both Neil and the Hinkleys were involved in the oil business in Denver at the time. Poppy had visited them recently, but not at the time of the shooting. The families were friends.

16. well, that's what the internet say but...
...in the 1980s, the story was that Poppy was indeed having dinner at the Hinckley's, good friends of his from the oil bidness.

It seems the story has changed in the internet era and the Neil Bush/Hinckley connection gets all the play if you try to "google" for information on this topic. I think Neil is the designated "bad guy" of the Bush family, sort of like Osama for the bin Laden family, but some deeds attributed to Neil may have actually involved others. Neil Bush did not cause the U.S. gov't to spend $3 million dollars prosecuting the man who shot the president and several others on camera and in front of many witnesses -- and yet fail to secure a conviction.

Al Haig should have not declared himself acting president but we had a situation where the VP was likely involved in the conspiracy to remove the president, and I think there was a lot of panic as they did not want this story getting in front of the public or in front of the Soviets, though there were still endless speculation "back in the day" just how far Poppy's involvement meant. There is little doubt that Nancy Reagan believes that the Bushes hired Hinckley to kill Reagan. To be honest, I believe it too. Any other man, without Hinckley's connections, would have been convicted of his crime instead of going to a cushy mental institution where he gets to check out on the weekends.

How would we feel if John Lennon's killer got to "check out" on the weekends? This is probably how the Reagans feel about the Hinckleys and the Bushes. I am no Reagan fan, not by a long shot, but I am still angry that we failed to properly prosecute and investigate this shooting.

12. He WAS in an airplane....
According to Tarpley:

" George Bush was visiting Texas that day. Bush was flying from Fort Worth to Austin in his Air Force Two Boeing 707. In Fort Worth, Bush had unveiled a plaque at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, the old Hotel Texas, designating it as a national historic site. This was the hotel, coincidentally, in which John F. Kennedy had spent the last night of his life, before going on to Dallas the next day, November 22, 1963. Here was a sinister symbolism!

In Austin Bush was scheduled to deliver an address to a joint session of the Texas state legislature. It was Al Haig who called Bush in the clear and told him that the President had been shot, while forwarding the details of Reagan's condition, insofar as they were known, by scrambler as a classified message. Haig was in touch with James Baker III, who was close to Reagan at George Washington University hospital. Bush's man in the White House situation room was Admiral Dan Murphy, who was standing right next to Haig. Bush agreed with Haig's estimate that he ought to return to Washington at once. But first his plane needed to be refueled, so it landed at Carswell Air Force Base near Austin...."

13. Carswell is Ft. Worth, not Austin...
...Austin, at the time had Bergstrom AFB. Maybe Tarpley is confused.

17. My bet is they returned to Carswell, having not yet attained
Austin. Since it would make more sense to go north to refuel if they turned in mid-flight.
Also, I don't buy it.
What is the range on a lightly-loaded USAF 707? Should be able to round-trip back to DC from Texas.
