Ritz crackers, not saltines.

38. Love Ham-hocks
With split peas or navy beans.

The supermarkets one shops at can indicate the preferences of the market it serves. I currently live in L.A.s San Fernando Valley, my market has only a tiny place for 4 or 5 packages of Ham hocks in the meat counter. When I lived in the Bay & shopped in Oakland, the Super-K had two cooler cases FULL of that lovely gift from the pig!

17. Maryland style crab soup!
The food of the gods! Tomatoe base, fresh corn, lima beans, onion, taters, ham bone or kielbasa(my variant)& lots of crab meat, claws & mustard(poop).
Haven't been able to make the stuff for 2 years cause you can't get decent live crabs in SC anymore. Dealer told me that they all get shipped to Maryland for the big bucks.

40. Can't you go crabbing and catch your own?

When I lived in Charleston many years ago we did a lot of crabbing. A line, some chicken bones, a net, a bucket, and you're good to go. Used to get nice big blue claws.

Plus, grosses everyone out and they don't ask for any, and they leave me alone, and it's all for me me me (works to bite through one of the oysters and the inside is GREEN and show it to anyone who remarks it smells good! Eww! How can you stand to eat that!).

Edit: How could I mess up "Eww". It's a gift.

36. Home made of anything
I happen to have on hand. Just throw it all in the pot. Some usual ingredients:

fresh tomatoes from the garden
black-eyed peas
rosemary, sage, garlic, onion from the garden
mustard or turnip greens or spinach; from the garden if possible
green beans
asparagus
various squashes
okra, if I happen to have it
pepper, and a small pinch of salt

some leftover protein; chicken, beef, or italian sausages.

And anything else I happen to find.

41. Avgolemono!! (It's no contest. None at all.)
Edited on Wed Mar-10-04 11:37 PM by TahitiNut
SOUPA AVGOLEMONO (GREEK EGG-LEMON SOUP) - 6 servings

2 qt Chicken broth; strained
1/2 c Raw long grain white rice
2 Whole eggs or egg yolks
2 Lemons; (juice only)
-Salt

Bring the broth to a full boil in a soup kettle. Gradually add the rice, stirring constantly until the broth boils again. Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer until the rice is just tender, not mushy, 12 to 14 minutes. Remove from the heat and keep warm while preparing avgolemono. Beat the eggs for 2 minutes. Continue to beat, gradually add the lemon juice. Slowly add some of the hot broth to the egg-lemon mixture, beating steadily. Stir the mixture into the soup and cook over minimum heat, without boiling, until the soup thickens to coat a spoon. Taste for salt, and keep warm over hot water until ready to serve. Pass the pepper mill at the table for additional zest.

(If desired, bite-sized pieces of cooked chicken may be added to soup before adding the rice).

44. Senegalese Soup or Mulligatawny
Anything with curry rocks!

Beyond that, all the thick soups are nice -- black bean, lentil, split pea, the various potato combos. If you can put it through a blender and have it come out sludgy, I'm for it.

46. All the soups I like are home-made or restaurant-made,

except the Campbell's tomato soup that I mix with milk for cream of tomato soup, which is wonderful with cheese toast or grilled cheese.

Mr DB and I like to make soup, like to eat soup, and it's hard to pick a favorite soup.

Maybe we need a thread for sharing soup recipes?
