Good Shepherds Pie Recipes?
I had a hankering for this today so I made one. Very simple recipe...saute ground beef and onions, salt and pepper, put in a casserole dish and top with mashed potato and cheddar cheese and bake for 30 minutes. I added a little tomato paste to the beef.

Does anyone have a "sexier" recipe? :-)

1. Why would you want a "sexier" recipe?
Sounds perfectly yummy to me. I think I gained a pound just thinking about it. :)

4. I tried it without
the tomato paste. It was a little dry. How do you prevent that?

8. Lamb
I've heard of some recipes with lamb in them. I guess either ground or stew cubes would be fine.

And Dookus is right about the carrots and peas.

12. My mother's recipe:
Edited on Wed Mar-10-04 03:41 PM by Love Bug
Layer in 3-quart casserole dish in this order:

1-2 lbs. ground beef, browned well, drained and seasoned with sauted chopped onions, salt and pepper. Add 1/2 teaspoon summer savory (optional)

1 can creamed corn mixed with 1 can drained whole kernal corn

Top with enough mashed potatoes (can be made fresh, leftover, frozen or, if you really have to, from a box mix) for about 6 servings. Dot with butter and sprinkle with paprika.

Bake for 30-45 minutes until browned in a 350 degree oven.

mmmmm..... my sister and I fight over the brown crusty bits on top.

Edit: One sad aside. A few years ago we knew something was wrong with our mother when we asked her to make shepherd's pie (something she had only made about a zillion times) and she said, "What's that?" Turns out she was in early-stage Alzheimer's. Shepherds' pie always makes me think of her.
