Computer people - what price should I ask for this old computer?
It's a Compaq Presario 5000 Series I bought back in early 2001:

Pentium III 933 MHz processor
128 MB RAM (upgradeable)
60 GB hard drive
2 CD drives, one CD, one CD-RW
56K Modem

It has Windows ME on it and Microsoft Works, and some other programs as well that I can't recall right now. (XP will run on it)

I also have a Magvision 14" monitor with flat screen that would be sold with it.

Any ideas on what to ask for it? Thanks in advance.

3. Definitely more than $100!

Unless you don't need the money and want to cut someone that can't afford a computer a deal.

What I always do in these situations is go on ebay and look for something comparable, then you'll have a good answer.

I'd say you can get at least $300 for it.

4. Maybe $300, $350
Especially since you're including a flat-screen monitor.

I'd bet you can find a college student or maybe an older person who wants to own a computer for the first time. My main computer is also a P3-933 and it runs everything well. PC-100 (or 133) memory is so dirt cheap that you should spend $25 for an upgrade to sweeten the deal.

5. I never sell my old computers
If you can live without the money, find some needy student who can't afford a computer and give it to him or her. I've given away three computers, and while none were top of the line by the time I gave them away, ALL were greatly appreciated by their recipients.

Maybe 40-50 for the monitor....or 30 depending on how old or new it is...

7. I'd agree with most posters....
300 to 350 but you might be offered 275ish...
Look up on pricewatch.com each component separately and
then tally them up. Discount about 25 to 35% for depreciation
and you should have your fair market value...

9. do NOT sell or donate your pc without formatting the hard drive..
as a privacy issue, I would advise that you run a low-level format on your HDD, and reinstall Windows before you sell or donate your computer.

10. Already done
I did a complete system restore and re-checked everything - but good advice nonetheless.

11. Windows ME doesn't come bundled any more.
I priced new laptops today at Circuit City, and the Windows package is just a 30 day free trial for all of them now. You have to buy it later. Works is bundled, but yuck.
Any way, Windows is now about $200.
