Seriously, say it with me:
Edited on Wed Mar-10-04 06:40 PM by jpgray
Definitely, NOT 'definately'.

Toe the line, NOT 'tow the line'.

Hear hear, NOT 'here here'.

Post your other favorite DU language mishaps here. And don't say 'meme' anywhere in your post or I will kill you.

edit: Confused someone below. :)

It allows you to stab someone in the face over the internet. I expect it will be pretty popular.

11. that one has always made me crazy!
you'd think that after saying the phrase umptillion times a person might actually parse the sentence for meaning just once.

21. The worst ever
Whenever somebody says that to me in person, I keep saying "So, you actually care." Some don't get it after three or four tries, so I give up. Soooooooooooo irritating.

4. "Media"
It's plural, not singular.

"Hypocracy"

"Free Speach"

"Grammer"

6. Hey...
I thought 'toe the line' was the correct way.. and 'tow the line' was wrong....

As in like.. the proverbial "line in the sand".. and stepping up to it...."Toe the line"

tow the line sounds like a disabled boat being towed in...

someone clarify?

Heyo

9. "Toe the line" is correct.
And so is "Hear, hear." I just checked both in the dictionary.

Oh, and does "anal-retentive" have a hyphen? :-)

10. Id' hoped the 'say it with me' would imply the CORRECT form would be given
Apparently it confused some folks, so now it has been edited for your enduring satisfaction.

14. Some more I thought of
Stapler remover (It's "staple remover")

For all intensive purposes (It's "intents and purposes")

Stationery vs. stationary. (The former is paper; the latter means "not in motion.")

15. Well, did we ever get a definitive answer on this question:
Douchebag, Douche bag, or Douche-bag?

This was brought up in a post a few weeks ago, and I don't know if we reached a consensus. Since it's one of my favorite words, I'd like to be sure I'm spelling it correctly.

I'm partial to douchebag.
