I did a poverty simulation today, Everyone should have to do this.

Everyone who isn't living it, that is. I was pissed when the DHS case worker gave me a voucher saying I qualified for job training, but couldn't tell me where to take the voucher to get that training. Oh, and when the mortgage banker foreclosed. Bastid.

Finally paid the bill this afternoon but couldn't get through to the office to ask for restoral. Luckily, there was a truck out here doing something else at about 8 tonight and the guy helped me out without question when I asked him. Stormy, rain, cold, not the kind of night you want to be without heat or light.

I think I have to get a makeover and go troll the PG&E cafeteria for a new husband because that guy was THE HANDSOMEST man I've ever seen and especially when he was holding his pliers. :rofl:

2. Your practicum sounds better than my simulation.

Mine was full of social workers, probation officers, and clergy. No one with interesting pliers at all!!

4. It's a document, a slip of paper, that says you have the right to something.

So, I had this document that said I was qualified for job training. Theoretically, I should've been able to take it somewhere to get job training. But no one knew where I was supposed to take it. So, the simulation ended without my getting any training, nor the monpoly money one assumes came from said training. :grr:

9. It was a simulation. So, when it was over, we handed in our nametags

and went home. You rightly point out, it's not the same as practicing poverty. It does help me feel for those who do.

8. I lived that experience as a kid and have also taken

part in a poverty simulation. I don't know how effective it is in the long term.

10. I suppose the effectiveness depends on the individual.

If one is open to learning, one will learn. I personally think all clergy should have to do it. I get so sick of colleagues telling me I have to be careful of helping those who come to my door, because I have no idea who they are, whether they really need help, what they're really doing with the assistance they get. This might open their eyes. Might not, but it's worth a try.
