Authors: have you tried the self-publishing route, and if so what was your experience?

Did you like it?

Was it affordable?

How did you get real distribution, (i.e. bookstores and not just online sources?).

Did you get creative control over your cover and media, including press releases, interviews and other forms of media exposure?

Any experiences you wish to share would be hugely appreciated.

1. I had a coworker for AmeriCorps who did that...

I have no idea what he paid, but he was a starving college student like the rest of us so it was reasonable...I'm sure.

He put his book on Amazon, that was his primary means of distribution...well that and he used to carry around like 5 copies with him.

He designed the cover, type-set and if he'd had any reason to want media coverage, I guess he'd have gotten control over that too.
