Edit: By greatest, I'm assuming you mean taught in English classes 25 years from now....as opposed to the stuff I read.

3. I'd say McCarthy, though I haven't gotten around to Delillo or Irving, and any of the others
save maybe Salinger (yeah, 'Catcher' is a classic and all, but compared to 'Blood Meridian' or 'Beloved'???) can make a legitimate claim. And Philip Roth deserves a nomination too.

5. Don't know about the greatest, but my favorite is Kim Stanley Robinson.

His book The Years of Rice and Salt may be the best book I've ever read. It came out in 2003 and I've read it three times already.
