Shit, I might have missed a job opportunity!
Edited on Wed May-06-09 06:51 AM by lightningandsnow
I just turned down a job interview for a job as an insurance salesperson at "American Income Life". I had my resume posted on monster.ca, since I'm looking for summer jobs, and they contacted me. It sounded kind of fishy, since the person said, "We've seen all your qualifications and we're very interested!", and my only "qualifications" were being doing various volunteer jobs, mostly for school clubs and nonprofits.

Also, they were looking for permanent staff I think, and I only need a job for two months.

Did I just miss a great job opportunity or a scam?

If it was legit, I'm annoyed.

1. There are unfortunately scammers on Monster
:( I can't vouch for the opp you saw, but if it sounds fishy to you, trust your gut feeling. And be annoyed anyway.

Good luck! :hi:

2. Sounds like a scam
I used to get solicitations like that when I was job hunting. That and mortgage industry jobs..when I clearly was interested in biotech. If you get the oh we like your skillz comments when CLEARLY thats not what your resume is about, its a scam.

3. a scam
I have my resume posted and I get "offers" from insurance companies and car dealerships, etc. and other things which (a) I have no experience in and (b) are not even in the area I am trying to find work at all, plus some even more dubious and vague offers in "customer service." I had one guy cold call my cell phone, and it pissed me off a bit, so I was kind of rude to him - which was ironic because he mentioned my "people skills" in the call, but still managed to never admit what the actual job was.

4. Insurance companies will hire most any warm body
AIL website

They hire a ton of people and see who can last. I almost took an insurance selling job a few years ago but after calling around and talking to several agents I didn't. They all told me basically that you need about 3 months of income saved up-it takes that long to really get up and running.

I used to work in the admin part of a company associated with insurance. Across the hall there were always new faces. They charged these guys for everything-copies, faxing, etc. Insurance can be very very lucrative IF you make sales and some sales are cold calls. Risk and reward-there is an attrition rate that makes the field formidable.
