Smuggler's Plot For The Birds
Two charged with illegal import of Asian magpies, robins, bul-buls

MAY 5--Two California men were indicted today on federal charges that they illegally smuggled Asian songbirds into the country, most recently last month when one of the defendants, returning from a trip to Vietnam, was found with 14 live birds strapped to his legs. As seen in the below evidence photo, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents at Los Angeles International Airport discovered the birds under the pants of Sony Dong. According to a Department of Justice press release, CBP agents inspected Dong and "found bird feathers and droppings on his socks, as well as birds' tail feathers visible under his pants." A subsequent search "discovered 14 live birds attached to two flat pieces of cloth that were wrapped around his calves. The birds included three red-whiskered bul-buls (which is listed as an injurious species under federal law), four magpie robins and six shama thrush." The birds each appear to have been placed in sleeves that were hooked on to the cloth around Dong's legs. A second man, Duc Le, 34, was later arrested in connection with the bird smuggling. According to a criminal complaint, Dong told investigators that he purchased birds for $50 each and re-sold them for $300-$400 apiece. (3 pages)

4. I see why he tied the birds to his ankles...
He originally hid them elsewhere, but the birds kept pecking at what looked rather like an earthworm wiggling about...

Also, what the heck did he do to keep them quiet? Social creatures; a gaggle of them are bound to make lots of noises. Since they're trapped, they'd likely give a warning call to encourage other birds to stay away - or at least the call indicating "No worms to peck on here..."

6. not to mention the trail of shit following him everywhere
unless the pouches were constructed in such a way that the birds were forced to shit on themselves. If that were the case, it would only make them angerier and want to make more noise.

5. Wait, the birds are deemed illegal too?! What did they do, smuggle crack in their beaks?!
That's why they remained silent... coked up...

Or they're half dead from avian flu... maybe this guy, a real dong-head, was engaging in bioterrorism?
