Sci-fi is supposed to be complex. Not pretty like normal movies or television.

Any sci-fi storyline that "makes sense" to mass audiences has to be more vapid and brain-dead than Britney Simpson Duff Cyrus Hilton while drunk.

I'm just sorry people prefer visuals and seeing remakes than to suspend disbelief and take a real intellectual risk.

1. Yet apparently you're a fan of ST:TNG and the Q character in particular.
Go figure.

2. The new movie seems to have inspired an emotional response.

3. Inspiring thought on many issues seems to be a big part of scifi

If it is just a thrill ride, or character drama only, without inspiring introspective thought, then I would not call it traditional scifi. But many people want audiences to just see flashy pretty lights, and not think on things much. And many people want a society that does not think on things very much.

I still have to go see it, but if it is simple, I will probably be disappointed. It could still be a good movie, but it would not be a good sci-fi Trek Movie if it is simple. But like I said I haven't seen it yet, so don't know.

Edit, sometimes movies can be simple and complex at same time, where it depends how many layers you see. It is possible for one person to see a flashy fun movie, and another to see a deep movie, but as I said, I will have to see it first.

4. disagree completely
The original Star Wars was well done but had pretty simple themes. It appealed to many because of that. You seem to have it in your head that something being "popular" automatically makes it bad...which is elitist nonsense in my book.good sci fi has good story lines and themes. And I hate the authors who think they have to make their work incomprehensible to 90% of the populace to be successful Look at Shakespeare...he wrote for the general populace and he wrote quite well..so that even today his work is appreciated. Is there bad simplistic scifi? Yep. But the snobby overcomplicated incomprehensible stuff is just as bad IMO. Oh and harmful too--any genre that gets a reputation of being elitist and snobby will not survive
