My dad died this morning.

My dad died this morning.
He wasn't in any pain, and his wife was with him at the time. I had spent the entire day with him, and went home only four hours before the end. We all had a chance to say goodbye.

11. A German artist in Frankfurt in 1970.
My father was in the Army Nurse Corps. His lapel insignia are the ANC's caduceus with black enamel "N" on them. While the portrait was being drawn, my Dad looked at it to check the progress. The artist had drawn the caduceuses as the German Federal Eagle, the symbol of West Germany, which looks a little too much like the Nazi eagle for comfort. My dad pointed this error out to him, and the artist redrew them. But they always looked a little like the German eagle...

I've got this hook thing on my front screen door. Every once in a while, when I'm in a rush, my coat or sweater will get caught on that hook. My dad was one of those key-jingling dads who would threaten us that he was going to drive off without us if we didn't hurry. Now, when that damned hook catches me, I think of Dad. The memory reminds me to take a breath and realize that life passes by fast enough.

I read your posts from earlier this weekend about putting into hospice and spending some time with him. I'm glad you spent time with him. May you keep the happy memories of him close to heart, and be able to release the unhappy ones.

I lost mine in 2003. I hope you have a better time adjusting to it than I did, though I suppose nobody ever "adjusts" completely to something like this. I'm afraid of those people.
