Most popular baby names in 2008
http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/

I'm surprised that Evelyn is so popular right now. Not because it isn't a nice name (I think it's pretty), it just seems a little out of place next to Addison and Madison and the other newfangled names.

2. We're having a hard time coming up with boy's names...
My wife likes Sawyer and Emerson. I can live with Sawyer but Emerson - I'm not having my son named after a piece of crappy home electronic equipment.

An "old time" name we would have loved to use would have been Percy - especially as there were Percy's on my side of the family. However when I was told it sounded too much like "Pussy" in the southern US accent it wouldn't be fair to give my son that name.

4. I vote for Percy. My brother's name was Percy.
He was a 4th. He is gone now. He was Percy Shields Byrnes, IV. We are as southern as you get, and I swear, it doesn't sound like that.

7. I think Sawyer is cute
I agree with you...not a big fan of Emerson. It reminds me of middle school since that was the school's name. I like the names Elliot and Preston. I don't plan to have children but maybe for pet names.

26. Carefully consider what nicknames might go with those names: "Emo" for example...
But at least Emerson makes a better name than Lucky Goldstar (LG), as far as electronics themed names.

28. How about "Perry"?
It's one letter off from Percy, but unlikely to get your son beaten up like Percy might.

Here in the South, people give girls barf-awful genderless names like Sloane, Shelby, Kendall & Madison (I REALLY detest Madison.) Those names are for Old English sheepdogs, not little girls.

I'm waiting for Lucinda to make a comeback. I like that name.

I named my girls Genevieve & Meredith.

When I have a girl, her name is going to be Lily Rose. Or maybe Juliana Pearl.

34. Emma means "healer of the Universe."
And many cool people have that name, including my beloved Emma Thompson.

Lily Rose is a beautiful choice, by the way. Simple, elegant, classic, but not overused, like all my favorite baby names.

(the mermaid was named Madison, after Madison Ave.), or the parents want to call their daughters "Maddy" but don't like the name Madeleine.

Madeleine, my daughter.

and no, we don't call her "Maddy". Madster, and Madelinska, are the proper terms.

21. Evelyn is nice. It's my grandmother's name. She's almost 90.
I like old-school names.

I notice my own first name took a precipitous drop into the triple-digits around 1998.

Very possibly, because it also belonged to the most infamous White House intern of all time.

32. Change it.
My 13 year old ask me if she had been born a boy what name had we chosen and I said Marley Cobain so now she wants to change her first name to Marley. (After Bob Marley of course). Then when I told her there's was Marley's Ghost she was even more excited about it.

42. My in-laws gave me hell for wanting to name my older boy Ethan
almost 22 years ago.

They said it was too weird. They said he'd be teased because of his name. They said it sounded like a "sissy" name.

My mother-in-law passed away over 10 years ago, and my father-in-law probably doesn't remember complaining about it. So there's nobody to whom I can say, "I told you so". Sux.
