Who here has tried durian (the fruit)? I just got back from Taipei

a few days ago, and it was in some sushi at a buddhist retreat's restaurant. Was interesting ... very small amounts so there was no offensive smell, but the texture was a little bit difficult.

Smells just like they say...rotting garbage. Visually unappealing, too.

That doesn't mean there are not those who love it, but I'm not one.

Durian was the only thing I ever saw Andrew Zimmern gag on (Bizarre Foods)...

I wouldn't even want to be on the same block as, including balut, without so much as a belch. That pretty much sums up how ghastly durian must be. :scared:

The first bite was a bit surprising, but I liked the texture. I was told there is a bitter and a sweet part to it. I tried the bitter. The smell on the other hand...

On edit: I know a guy who's father grows durian trees. Apparently the rule is if you approach a durian tree and see one on the ground, RUN. More are about to drop and it's the last thing you want falling on your head. ;)

8. My DIL opened a durian one day when I was over. The taste was better

than the smell (which is pretty bad). It was really kind of bland with a custard like texture. Not anything that I would ask for, but it wasn't all that bad.
