I've considered applying for the Irish side. Might not be a bad idea if i were to travel to the Middle East.

24. A coworker has US-Irish AND US-Italian
He said the Irishw as very easy to get -- go for it!

My Irish peeps came over too long ago for me to get citizenship.

Remember: you can also live and work (including med benefits!) in ANY EU country.

US law would allow me to maintain dual citizenship. I became a US Citizen as a minor, so now that I'm an adult, I could choose to be a dual citizen.

11. US-Irish here.
For anyone interested in applying, it took me about a year. I was eligible through my mother's side of the family. It took me approximately 4 months to gather the necessary documents (everything has to be originals - no photocopies so even birth, marriage and death certificates had to be shipped from Ireland, notarized and certified). I called the appropriate Irish offices and requested the documents to speed up the process using my credit card to pay for the fees.

Once I put in the application, it took 8 months for the Irish Embassy to process.

I initially did it when GW Bush won office again in 2004. I was pretty disgusted with the US at the time and finally got my butt in gear and did the necessary work. I'm not sure how or if it will ever benefit me, but weirdly, it feels good to have it.

27. Thr US only recognizes certain countries for dual citizenship
Edited on Sat May-16-09 12:46 PM by LostinVA
You're pretty safe if your peeps came from an EU country. Then, it's up to that nation to determine who has it. Technically, you already have the dual citizenship, you just have to prove it. Germany and Ireland (I THINK): your parents or grandparents ahve to ahve come over to teh US. Italy: it can go back a zillion generations, but it has to be on the PATERNAL side, and the timing of when that ancestor got citizenship is key. With me, my GFF had to get citizenship after my GF was born. He didn't get it until tqo years before I was born. When I got it, my sister, Dad, and GF automatically were recognized. I can vote in Italian elections, too!

31. Holy crap! Could I become an Italian citizen?
My paternal grandparents arrived at Ellis Island early in the last century and I've got relatives in Sicily, even visited them once. But my grandfather became a U.S. citizen before my dad was born by enlisting during World War I.

34. No, because he became a US citizen before your Dad was born
ARRGGHH! So close! Your direct ancestor (dad) linked to the person who came from Italy (grandfather -- your GM doesn't count) had to have been born before the person who came from Italy became a US citizen.

I'm going to my mom's tomorrow for dinner and she has all the paperwork. I know my granddad became a citizen because he enlisted but I don't know how soon that happened. The war ended in 1918 and my dad was born in 1920. So we shall see.

My wife is a citizen of the PRC (People's Republic of China), but has a US green card. I've been telling her that she should look into duel citizenship, if possible... I would doubt the PRC qualifies as one of those countries.

29. Not me, but both of my parents do.
They were both born in different countries, not the US - and they don't have the same dual citizenships now, either. My dad still isn't a US citizen (he's a Canadian citizen), my mom is. Both also have a different second citizenship.

The story behind all of this would take even a good typist a couple hours to post. It would take me a week. :)

38. I know the US officially doesn't like dual citizenship
But I don't know of a single naturalized citizen here that denounced their original citizenship when they became a US citizen. I've heard that men who have Israeli citizenship (even if it's dual) have to serve in the army over there, it's mandatory. Is that true?

And, there are certain Foreign Service career positions you can't have if you have dual cit.

Italy used to have that law re: military service, but don't now. I'm not sure about Israel.

US-Brazilian, when I was a minor, lost it at 18. (Mom is a Brazilian national - she was a resident alien when I was born; she has dual citizenship now.) The laws have changed now so that I could reclaim it - I just have to go live there for six months or more. I'm looking into Portuguese classes. :)

edited to add the obligatory "Then I would have a brazillion citizenships!" :woohoo:

44. My daughters are both dual nationals
My wife is a German citizen, and both daughters were born in Germany. I went down to the American embassy after each birth and immediately got them American citizenship with social security numbers and the whole works. Due to their German mother and being born in Germany, they were obviously also given German citizenship at birth. They now can live and work in either the USA or the European Union, and both are completely bi-lingual, and at home in either place.
