When will you realize...Vienna waits for you (--Billy Joel, and now me)
I hadn't been down here in decades, but there was a special thing going on, and my wife and I came down with a few friends. I had forgotten how much cool architecture was in this city, as befits the center of a former empire. Tonight (Saturday, May 15) was kind of a madhouse downtown, and we didn't hang around to the bitter end. For sheer physical beauty, Prague still wins out, but Vienna retains plenty of its old world charm.

*for our right wing lurkers, who couldn't care less as to why the Vienna city hall area was just a bit crowded tonight (May 16), here's some more of Billy Joel's song (some more good advice they'll ignore):

But you know that when the truth is told
That you can get what you want
Or you can just get old
You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through
When will you realize...Vienna waits for you

1. Nice place.
Haven't been there for a number of years. I visited Prague far more recently. I agree with your take about Prague vs Vienna - but Prague didn't sustain as much damage in WW II. I also prefer Vienna, but that is because I used to speak a passable German, which got me further in Vienna. I've gotten back into photography since I visited either, and would like to visit both again, with a small amount of gear.

For a flavor of postwar Vienna, catch the old Orson Welles b&w classic "The Third Man".

2. Not to mention the music track for The Third Man
Talk about a sound track that was half the atmosphere of the film!

3. My dear DFW!
And what do you know? I will be in Vienna sometime in the next three weeks or so!

I've been to Prague, and the old city is wonderful...

I'm looking forward very much to Vienna!

Billy Joel speaks for me too...;)

:hi:

7. Have a great time while here!
Bill Clinton will be gone (I thinks he is already) by the time you get here, but the Schönbrunn palace
that has been here forever should still be around, and it's well worth the visit, not to mention the
pastries and other food!!!!!!!

We're off back to the German Rheinland this evening--seems like we just got here.
