I need a good lap dog
Lol, I only have 3/4 of a lap these days, but I cant put my 80 pound half pit in my lap, despite being one of the sweetest dogs I have ever had.

I want a breed that is good with older kids, easy to potty train( I might get one that is already trained, an adult dog perhaps), and isn't very rambunctious. I can spend a LOT of time with the animal.

Im going to check out the local humane society and a shelter I have heard about.

I would love to hear suggestions.

2. But seriously, I'll always recommend the miniature schnauzer
No shedding, very affectionate, love pack leader contact.

17. schnauzers tend to be barky
Just be wary of that when you pick one out.

21. My Grandparents had one that would bark non-stop
and a buddy of mine has one that only gives a couple of yips when someone came to the door. My Grandparents' schnauzer cost them some friends..she would bark like crazy whenever someone entered the room. She lived to be 18.It was pretty funny, whenver my Grandparents had a house full of family and guests their dog would go hide under the bed..just too many people to keep tabs on..LOL

22. We did have a white one that barked at the doorbell on 'Frazier'
You don't realize how many times that sound effect is used until a dog reacts to it.

4. Chihuahua!
They are the best lap dogs!! I love mine! She's so cute, and we trained her to go in a litter box.

6. Yes.
We trained her. We got her when she was like one month old. The breeder we got her from was using the "pads" so we thought the transition to a litter box wouldn't be so bad. It took a few weeks, and she would have an occasional accident, but she trained in the litter box in no time.

She really is such a good dog. She only barks when someone is at the door or when we vacuum! (but what dog likes the vacuum!). She doesn't "shake" like some of her breed do. She is the best doggy!

19. You are lucky she only barks when someone is at the door.
I have a Chihuahua and she is a yapper. She barks at anything that moves outside. And when someone comes to the door, she goes crazy.

8. The main caution here is that ...
... this can only work with females. Males have an instinct to mark.

27. That is sorta true.
We had a male for awhile, we were going to try and breed them, but the male was psycho. He did go in the box once and awhile, but he didn't take to it as easily as the female.

I always liked female dogs better. Much easier to train, imo.

We gave the boy back to the breeder. We were going to just try and breed and then give the male back anyway. It didn't work out.

7. I have two rat terriers and I could not imagine a better lap dog

Egypt (bandit mask) and Zeus (red-head) are both rescue dogs. Egypt went from a puppy mill to a kill shelter and finally landed in rescue. Zeus went from the puppy mill straight into rescue.

I know Texas has a large rat terrier population (they are hard to come by here in upstate NY) so you should have no problem finding one in a shelter if you are so inclined.

Good luck, and thank you for adopting

15. Thank you for asking.... She has been transferred to a spinal
cord injury rehabilitation center.

She is now able to eat on her own, and she posts on her facebook these days. She posted over the weekend that she was able to take a couple of steps without the walker - but holding the bars.

They have electrically stimulated the left side of her face, so she is not "drooping" anymore.

We are not sure how long she will be there.

I am sure those DU vibes helped her out. The original prognosis was VERY BAD, but she seems to be fighting tooth and nail to get her life back.

10. Best bet is to goto Humane Society/Animal Control/Rescues...
And let one pick you.

Tell the person there what you want. I have a dauchund mix for my lap ;) She also make a great bedwarmer in the winter nights. She goes almost everywhere I go.

Small dogs are cool but some of them are freaking "yappy." Just my opinion, mind you, but Chihuahuas and Pomeranians are annoying to me how they are tempered.

Ever consider a cat?

If you want to find a shelter near you that may have what you want, click on link in my sigline.

You rock!

He is sort of doofy-looking though and he has one of those whining barks.

14. I saw a piece over the weekend about adopting an adult animal.
One of the advantages is that you know just what to expect as far as size and temperament. They also mentioned that you sometimes get a complete health history on the animal as well. Good luck on your search for a new buddy.

20.  Boykin Spaniels are great!
They're smaller than Cockers, bred as retrivers. They are soft and cuddly, bond with you, and model their behavior/energy level after yours. Mine sleeps in the bed with me, likes to sit in the chair with me, and this morning I woke up to find her wrapped around my head! They get along with dogs, cats, kids, adults, but are also good watchdogs.

They are loving sweet burrowers. They love to be right next to you or on your lap and mine sleep under the covers by my legs every night. It's a regular weinie dog sandwich! Their personalities are so funny and I just adore mine :)

25. these are all awesome sounding breeds
I am going to have to google a couple of them, because I have never heard of them.

I have two cats, but they arent much for sitting in my lap.
My neighbor has a boston terrier that I adore, but way too high energy for me.
Im going to really do my homework.
The shelters recommend bringing my other dog, and the family...That's a great idea.
I am taking my time, because I really want a lifelong companion.
Yall are great!

They were bred to be lap dogs. Don't know how easy they are to housetrain, as I never had one. I always wanted a Cavalier.
