Across the river, nuclear reactor shut down after leak

Nuclear plant workers manually shut down PSEG’s Hope Creek reactor along the Delaware River early Sunday after an air line leak affected automated reactor controls.

Nuclear Regulator Commission said there was no requirement to activate emergency safety systems during the incident, caused by the failure of a solder joint on an air supply line. The leak was discovered after sensors detected “indications of multiple control rods drifting.”

Control rods are large tubes of materials that absorb the particles that maintain nuclear chain reactions. The tubes are arranged in a grid to fit in the spaces between nuclear fuel rods. Plant workers adjust the control rods to manage nuclear reaction levels and energy production in Hope Creek’s core, with rod positions able to be adjusted both automatically and through manual controls.

NRC officials said the plant remained in a normal shutdown this morning.
