Swap soil for straw to grow a garden
"Wake Forest, N.C. — Worries about the down economy and food safety are fueling a boom in home gardens. However, many people don't want to toil in the garden, or they don't have enough yard space. A Wake Forest man says he has the answer: straw bales.

"Anything you grow in a traditional garden, just about anything, will grow in straw-bale garden,” Kent Rogers said."

1. My mother has done this for several years.
It works pretty well, but you have to keep the bale moist and use fertilizer since there really isn't that much in the way of nutrients in the straw itself. She's done tomatoes and cucumbers that way and while the yields aren't that great, it is a convenient way to have an instant garden.

2. My aunt grew potatoes in seaweed from the ocean. Worked perfectly.
