Just put Purrcilla down. 17 years old, and my second kitty in a week.
Sparkle had just turned 6, and died of kidney cancer. She was euthanized last week.

Purrcilla just got old. She quit eating and drinking over the last couple days. It was the right decision, but it hurts. I shall miss her. Sweet kitty.

6. Don't know what I will do right now. With dogs aged 16,13 and 9, I may sit tight.
I can't believe I lost two in one week. Right now, I will just sit tight. But I likely will adopt an old cat in another month.

Need some breathing room right now, though.

7. I'm so sorry
I was with my 17 year old cat when he had to go to sleep. He had a stroke, and just couldn't go on. But I got a few minutes with him before it happened, and I scratched him and he purred. He was happy for me to be there, and I was grateful to be there for him. Even though it's tragically sad, I think it's a good thing to be with our beloved furry friends when they move on. We'd want the same from them.

10. Thanks to you, and to all so much. Goes with the territory.
You never expect to lose two in a week. But when they throw the dirt over me, at least they can say I loved my dogs and cats unconditionally.

And they loved me back even more.

12. I am having a much tougher time than expected today,
I guess 17 years, and an unexpected passing, has an impact.

I had to make this decision quickly, and I miss her. But I have seen this with other pets. I think I did the right thing, but after 17 years, I am weeping all day.

28. That sounds about right
When I had to put my Afghan doggie to sleep (she had lung cancer), my roommate's doggie Woofie was so lost (and my dog Sasha used to beat her up all the time!). It was so sad to watch Woofie wandering around looking for Sasha. They used to gang up on the cats!

When they get so sick it's time to let go. You might feel sad, because you lost a loved one, but you shouldn't feel bad. I hope you can celebrate all of the joy your feline friends brought you.

30. You didn't kill your cat today.
I know that's hard to get over, but she was very sick and old, and I am sure that it's hard to think that you had to make that choice for her, but what can you do? Watch her starve to death because she can't eat? The hardest thing is that animals do not talk (or they do, but not in so many words), so you have to more or less make a decision. I would certainly not want to hang around if I couldn't function. OOOPS,I'm still here...well, you know what I mean. I was totally devastated when I had to put my doggie to sleep, but she was suffering and was basically on life support. I held her in my arms when they did it, and then cried for about a week nonstop.

Don't watch the Rainbow Bridge thing--it will make you cry.

16. I am sorry to hear that
It hurts unbearably to loose a fur child. We lost our senior greyhound in November and just this morning got told by the vet that our 10 year old whippet has cancer in all his major organs. He still has a good quality of life so we will hold off on the decision to put him down for now, but we've been told that it's a matter of a few months at most. Damn but it hurts to loose them.

31. It sure does hurt to lose a good friend
Have lost mainly human friends (and my beloved Grandmother) in the past year. It is the same for losing a companion...it all sucks, but if you are born, you will die, also. Sad but true. Good luck with your whippet, and I hope that he has a comfortable remainder of life, as I am sure that you and your family will do your best to make it good for him. XXOO

We had our old one put down at 21, and it damn near killed me, because I was 25 at the time and I can't remember a childhood memory without her in it, but I know, if she could talk, she would be thanking me, and that she's waiting for me, Just as Purrcilla and Sparkle are waiting for you.  They never really leave us... 35. You did the right thing
It was inevitable and the second-guessing is inevitable too. No time is ever going to seem like the right time. I've had three that I waited too long and I still regret that. You did the right thing.

I lost 2 since last september (14 and 20yrs) and I know it hurts. That's the bad thing about pets. We almost always outlive them and have to deal with the loss, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

36. Life should be flagged for piling on.
That sucks. I know putting down my old cat of 17 years reduced me to a blubbering mess for weeks. Didn't help that he was still playing the morning we took him to the vet, even with a tumor in his jaw that made it impossible to eat or clean himself. He was playing the day I got him and he never stopped.

Rest in peace, Purrcilla.

To a Cat

Mirrors are not more wrapt in silences
nor the arriving dawn more secretive;
you, in the moonlight, are that panther figure
which we can only spy at from a distance.
By the mysterious functioning of some
divine decree, we seek you out in vain;
remoter than the Ganges or the sunset,
yours is the solitude, yours is the secret.
Your back allows the tentative caress
my hand extends. And you have condescended,
since that forever, now oblivion,
to take love from a flattering human hand.
You live in other time, lord of your realm -
a world as closed and separate as a dream.

-- Jorge Luis Borges

45. How are you doing?
Dealing with grief is the hardest part of working at a vet hospital. I never know quite what to say.

Two years my beloved rescue dog, Kalleigh, passed away suddenly. I often wondered if letting Kalleigh go was right because the doctor said she had 2-4 weeks to live. During those weeks, however, she would slowly lose functions. I didn't want to remember my angel that way and I didn't want to make her suffer.

In my opinion, you did make the right decision. Not being able to walk is not living at all. I would think your kitty appreciates the courage you showed in giving her a dignified end. You gave her years of love and she gave it right back.

46. You made the right call, too. And I will be fine.
This was sudden, but nowhere near having a doggie run over in front of my eyes. That happened in February 2001, and I don't think I have ever recovered. My fault; should have had her on a leash.

Anyway, I also have three dogs aged 16, 13 and 9, and one more cat who is 12. I think this will be a tough year.
