The verdict is in: the outside critters prefer sunflower seeds to the mixed bird seed.
I get way more birds (and squirrels and other critters) with the sunflower seeds.

I have recently stacked both in the bird feeder, allowing equal access to each, and the birds are, by a huge margin, choosing the sunflower seeds.

Except for the wee little birds, which seem to prefer the mixed bird seed, at least as I've noticed in the few times I've looked out the window and seen them eating.

Speaking personally, I wouldn't mind seeing them once in a while hosing down the patio as a "thank you", but no, they just take and take and take.

1. I recently switched to sunflower seeds
and I've noticed a lot more bird traffic, including a very nice cardinal pair. I have the same squirrel family living in my big front tree, and they're enjoying it quite a bit as well.

I've also caught blue jays stealing the cat food. I think the main ingredient is chicken, so that's a little unsettling.

4. Jays, like their cousins crows and ravens, are omnivores.
They'll eat anything they can wrestle down their throats.

3. They sure do. Sun seeds are their version of french fries or potato chips.
High fat and carb content which they need. Flying is labor intensive and there's all those kids to feed.

If you want to give the little guys a treat, get the hulled cracked sun seeds.

And no, don't expect a thank you. Wild birds aren't into gratitude.
