Great Spotted Woodpecker in our garden*
Since last Thursday, we've had a regular early morning visitor to the hanging peanut-and-suit feeders in the conifer tree at the edge of our little meditation garden. After some research at the Swiss Ornithological Institute website (listening to woodpecker calls and looking through photos), we've determined that our visitor is a Great Spotted Woodpecker. We have lots of the redheaded ones down here, but I've never seen one of those.

How cool! I'm guessing they're not normally seen in your neck of the woods?

He's obviously a very smart bird to have picked such a lovely spot to live in...

7. We have quite a few here, six kinds to be exact,
but this is the first one coming this close. Usually, you just hear them peck on some strees somewhere. ;)

We love watching red-bellied and downey woodpeckers visit our hummingbird feeders. They don't mind giving us really close looks at them either! Thank you for sharing!

18. What a pretty bird!
Our local Avian Americans are not quite so colorful..

Chickadees, grackles, pigeons, seagulls, mockingbirds, an occasional robin. We have one cardinal that stops by sometimes..

We don't have them here, but last year (very, very rare in this state) one of his relatives came to visit us (Bullfinch):
