A friend of mine needs some help
A guy I've known for a long time is having health problems. He is also uninsured and unemployed. He has a hiatal hernia that he needs surgery for. Right now he's taking a couple of generic meds that treat some of his symptoms. That's the only kind of care he can get right now. He's already run up some big medical bills. Because he went untreated for so long and hasn't had access to health care he went to the emergency room several times when the pain was just too much. They'd give him something called a G.I. cocktail and a prescription for a few pain pills and send him on his way.

He has checked into one of those places that specialize in getting people SSDI money. Those folks say that since he lives with his parents, who are employed, his household brings in too much money for him to qualify. That's a joke. They live in a cheap 2 bedroom apartment and it's all they can do to make the rent sometimes.

He needs that surgery more than anything. If he had that he would be able to work. I went over to visit him tonight and he is almost out of meds. He is scrambling to come up with the money for them by tomorrow. If he can't he will have to be in severe pain until he can come up with the money somehow.

Do you know of any place we can check into where he might get some help? We live in Ohio, btw.

1. If he is disabled, his parents income is not relevant.
That does not sound right to me.

2. It didn't sound right to me either, but that's what he told me tonight.
Maybe he should check elsewhere.

4. I think he might have when he checked into SSDI, but I'm not sure
We are both pretty much clueless on how this stuff works I think. I know I am.

5. Whatever he told you about his parents' incomes
was dead wrong.

All that matters is his income, his savings, what he owns, stuff like that.

If he's unemployed, living with his parents, and doesn't have a whole lot in the bank - does he collect unemployment, do you know? - he qualifies for Medicaid.

Google "medicaid." I'll bet it's all there ................................

7. You're a good friend -
he'll get faster service by applying for Medicaid - I think he can do it online - than he will going the disability route, which can take years, and has nothing to do with his medical needs.

You're a good friend. Good for you.
