9/11-"One Day's Pay"
I saw this on the Today Show this morning (Bingham's mother was on to help promote it). It really sounds like a good idea. You don't have to give a day's pay just do something for someone else or the community on or around September 11th. It's a "pay it forward" kind of thing.

http://www.onedayspay.org/

We're a national non-profit organization, working in partnership with The Coalition of 9/11 Families, the Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network, Youth Service America, Citizen Corps, and other leading groups to establish September 11 as a national day of voluntary service, charity and compassion - an initiative honoring the victims of the terrorist attacks on America.

Please join our effort now by registering your confidential, non-binding pledge to dedicate a portion of that day – however you see fit – to help others in need. It's free and there's no obligation. If you represent a business, school or other organization, you can register a group pledge as well. If you're unsure what to do, we can provide Helpful Ideas.

Thanks for visiting One Day's Pay.

From the "about us" page.
The organization has received State of California approval of its tax-exempt 501c3 application. Federal approval is expected soon.

1. Have they really thought this through?
What good will it do to flood charitable organizations with thousands of untrained volunteers all on the same day? Wouldn't encouraging regular community involvement be better?

2. Well gee I never thought of a "downside" to this
I think they want people and communities to organize BIG events around this and in doing so people who don't regularly volunteer will find an activity or group to work with on some sort of a regular basis.

3. I agree....it's like all the blood donors after 9/11....
People were so eager to do something immediately in tandem with 9/11 and failed to realize that the blood banks didn't need it all at once. I wonder how many of them actually waited or went back again to donate the following 6 months or even at the 1 year anniversary.

I agree its a noble intent but I just wish people would look at charity and kind acts as an ongoing thing rather than just a commemorative act.

5. Most of their suggestions
are pretty simple for one person to organize -- a food bank drive (make flyers, pass 'em out in the neighborhood, make an arrangement to drop off donations at the local food bank,) etcetera.

I got some great ideas from reading their site for less than ten minutes.

I like the idea. I think this year's might be a bit unorganized, but if people take the concept to heart and actually do a small service for others, as Underpants said, they'll start "paying it forward" on September 11th each year.

6. Exactly
It could be as simple as picking up garbage on your street our visiting and elderly neighbor (or getting to know them).

Nothing huge but it could become something big.
