My brother wants to go to medical school, so I need advice
Edited on Tue May-26-09 03:37 PM by Juche
On how he can apply and handle the interviews. I think he is in a great position, but he is worried.

He did an undergrad degree in 2005 at IU and applied to IU medical school. His MCATs were about 33, and his GPA was around 3.96 with a degree in mathematics. He got an interview but was rejected because he only applied to 1 school, and because he didn't do volunteer work (he made the mistake of saying he thought the volunteer work was mostly for show, not because the students wanted to do it. Which is true, but what can you do). So I guess they got the impression he wasn't serious, even though he was academically in a far better position than most who got accepted in.

He went to UCSD and is finishing his PhD in math in 2010 and just retook the MCATs and got a 36R with scores of biology - 11, verbal - 10, physical sciences - 15. He wants to go to a school in the California system since in state tuition is free (still has fees, but tuition is free). He has also done a good deal of medical research and volunteer work these last few years.

I told him to play off his perfect PS scores, and the fact that even though he applied in 2005 and was rejected at IU, that he still reapplied to med school after doing his PhD. To me that shows he has given medical school serious thought to apply, get rejected, do a PhD then apply again.

I think he wants to do more research work than clinical work. So I'm hoping his PS and biology scores will help him there.

Does anyone have advice I can give him on what to do to play on his strengths?
