Ewww, There's A Dead Squirrel In My Backyard
It's just laying there, flopped over to one side like it's sleeping.

It didn't appear to be hit by a car, it wasn't bloody or anything. It just seems to have been walking around in my backyard and keeled over.

Ewww.

Should I call anyone about this? I know that you should report dead birds to the authorities for West Nile checks. Has anyone ever heard of squirrels getting West Nile?

I don't know what to do?

5. for the West Nile virus
Out on Long Island a few years ago we started to have dead birds who were infected with West Nile. Now they run radio ads telling people that if they see a dead bird, to report it for inspection.

They didn't mention squirrels though?

17. Corvids - crows, magpies, ravens, and jays
are particularly susceptible to West Nile virus. If you see dead corvids, you should notify your local public health agency, as it indicates there is a high probability that West Nile-infected mosquitoes are in your area. West Nile can be fatal to humans.

Sorry, man. Couldn't resist the set-up line. I always wanted to be a professional comedian growing up, but I never made it past amateur smart-ass...

4. Nah.
Get at least five plastic grocery bags and pick it up that way. West Nile has not gotten to the squirrel population yet. Dont worry about rabies. Just be careful!! Poor squirrel. Ever have squirrel stew?

10. Use a shovel to fling him into the neighbor's yard or onto a street
He might just be stunned though. One time my brother and I were in the yard and a squirrel fell out of a tree onto the driveway. He looked dead, but after five minutes he got back up and ran away

11. In some states squirrels are spreading the plague.
Edited on Tue Aug-12-03 03:17 PM by MissMarple
New Mexico and Colorado in recent years have had plague infected squirrels and prairie dogs. I haven't seen any reports of human cases this year, but we have had them. Usually people survive with adequate medical care.

You may want to call your local public health department to let them know about the squirrel. It's probably nothing serious, but they should get a heads up, just in case.

Other than that, there's not much to do with a dead squirrel.

Like dead puppies, they're not much fun.
