MST3K fans? How great was that show?
Both incarnations were cool, but I preferred Mike to Joel. The musical bits were far superior and the invention-exchange was kinda lame.

1. big fan here and you are in the minority about Joel v. Mike among the purists
Edited on Fri May-29-09 01:43 PM by CreekDog
that said, I enjoy the Mike shows more than Joel. Joel gets credit for actually inventing the show and that's greater credit actually.

You can watch Mike skewer popular movies through something called "Rifftrax". I think they cost $2 and you play it along with the DVD or on-demand movie.

I recommend his books for added yucks: Movie Megacheese and Mind over Matters.

4. Very great!
I also prefer Mike to Joel, although I liked the vast majority of the musical bits and invention exchanges. Joel created the show but I think Mike perfected it.

Ever hear of Rifftrax? http://www.rifftrax.com/

5. Mike was an older brother or crazy uncle to the robots, Joel was their dad
which is why it was more funny with Mike.

Mike was more ribald.

Servo V Crow, now that's a discussion topic!

9. I compare Joel and Mike to two hitters on the same baseball team.
Joel was a contact hitter like Paul Molitor or Jimmy Gantner. He didn't hit it out of the park often, but he was very consistent hitter of singles and doubles, with a high on-base percentage. He consistently brought the funny, but it was dry, cerebral, and didn't usually have you rolling on the floor pissing your pants.

Mike was the power hitter who swung for the fences like Barry Bonds or Hank Aaron, He struck out a lot, however, if he makes contact, that ball had better have a meal and an movie on it, because it was in for for a long flight. That is to say, Mike went for the big laughs, and wasn't afraid to get a little more risque or stoop to bathroom humor to do it. And when Mike was on. You better be wearing a pair of Depends.

That said, I prefer Joel. I liked his wit better.

BTW Crow > Servo

11. Interesting analogy
But you gotta admit that Joel couldn't sing to save his own - or anyone else's - life. Other than that, your analysis is pretty spot-on.

but both guys were great.

That show was genius. Any show that makes wisecracks about Calvinism while watching bad sci-fi movies has me as a fan forever.

I miss it.

AND I JUST FOUND THEM AT NETFLIX!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the mammaries .................

19. Sorry, though it's possible that didn't happen until the show ended.
He gave an interview after that and said his goal was to be a good Christian. A few years ago (possibly just after the 2002 election) he wrote a LTTE in Vanity Fair essentially telling us to STFU because the "adults" were "in charge." In '04 during an interview--maybe with NPR--he said he hoped Bush won.

That was awhile ago. Maybe like so many others he has given up on the RW Christian thing.

37. If something is funny, it's funny...
...sometimes I think Dennis Miller is funny. I try not to let my political views get in the way of things that matter most, like laughing, good sex (or even bad sex for that matter--the worst I ever had was fabulous) or this nice thunderstorm we have rolling though now, after a beautiful day.

Here's some nice ELO for you:

Mister blue, you did it right
But soon comes mister night creepin' over
Now his hand is on your shoulder
Never mind I'll remember you this
I'll remember you this way

...to your point, Chris Buckley is one of my favorite authors, I find Kelsey Grammer funny, and I do admit I can still chuckle at the occasional Dennis Miller line.

41. And I've met conservatives who really like Thomas Pynchon.
Some of them even like Grey Poupon on their burgers. Pity that civil debate has been eviscerated in our society.

Anyway, I've been drinking and I'm tired and I commented on this board tonight enough.

Goodnight.

44. Oh yeah, he's hillarious.
I saw one of his "Film Crew" movies a few months ago. It was some really old movie with a very young Rue McCannahan who was trying to do some kind of erotic dance. It think it was Mike who said that she looked like his drunk aunt at a wedding.

I met Mike in person at the MST3K ConventioCon ExpoFest-A-Rama 2: Electric Bugaloo in Minneapolis in '96, and he complimented my costume at the costume ball, so I can't help but favor him just a teensy bit more than I do Mike.

29. I like Mike and Joel equally, but Pearl was lame.
Dr. Forester and TV's Frank were much better antagonists.

Tom Servo was my favorite 'bot from a comedy perspective, but Gypsy was the sexiest. She had a mouth that looked like it could suck a golf ball through a garden hose.

31. No doubt, Pearl was OK.
Dr. Forester (I'm pretty sure I'm spelling it wrong) and TV's Frank were SO much better. Just the name "TV's Frank" makes me LOL. BTW, is TV's Frank the same guy that played Andy on "According to Jim"? That just came to me and I'm too lazy/drunk to be bothered with going to the library and searching through the card catalog or Goggling it.
