I want a real light saber.
For the past all my birthdays, thats what I have really wanted.

A light saber where the blade is made of light. Not plastic. If it cut things that would be a bonus.

How hard can it be?

10. yeah but do light sabers stop bullets?
that's kinda important if you run into cops. I've always wondered what would've happened had the stormtroopers just picked up a pistol.

12. They cut through inches thick metal space hatches
I'm guessing a bullet would fare no better. So, turn half the mass into a puff of plasma, and I am guessing that would drastically change trajectory. Or maybe you just end up with a small splot of molten metal.

In the mean time, a true Jedi would just move out of the way. Or use the force to divert the bullets.

Ive always wondered why the Jedi, with mind powers wouldn't just make a point of teaching all padewans to tweak the wire that connects a laser to its power supply, making them nonfunctional. That would seem to be far more efficient of effort and lives than letting the bolts fly and be deflected all over everywhere.

19. For one thing, bullets travel much faster than blaster-bolts
Edited on Sat May-30-09 09:08 PM by Orrex
The unaided eye can track a blaster-bolt from its source to its destination with relative ease, so I'd say that the bolt can't be moving any faster than an arrow fired from a standard 20th century bow. And we've all seen video of regular, non-Jedi people catching arrows in flight or slicing them in half with a sword.

A bullet, by comparison, moves a great deal faster, and there's no on-screen indication that the Jedi can react to anything with that kind of velocity.

Regarding the wire-tweaking, I direct you to the scene in the Emperor's throne room in Episode VI. Palpatine opens Luke's shackles with a glance, indicating a level of control beyond anything else shown in the series (including the prequels). Luke is, in fact, astonished at this, and he's spent time with Yoda, so you know he's seen some Force-crazy stuff. We can therefore infer not only that this is the limit of a Jedi's/Sith's precision with telekinesis, but also that few Jedi/Sith have attained this level of control.

Tweaking a wire would be even more difficult, though we can still ask why the Jedi don't just yank the guns out of their enemies' hands or holsters...

32. Actually jedi DO yank guns out of people's hands.
Its one of the first force powers you can get in most Star Wars games that include force powers.

It just looks cooler on film to do a triple flip and cut their heads off, I guess. :P

38. The films are Star Wars fact; the rest is fiction
If it ain't on film, it ain't canon, and I don't care what Lucas has to say about it.

Of course, Luke in EpVI Force-yanks a gun from one of Jabba's guests, and Vader in EpV helps himself to Han's blaster with no trouble.

42. Do they?
or is that just the magic of a dramatic reenactment? Or even just your mind messing with you, trying to explain how awesome destructive bit of light got from point A to point B?

Anyway. its not a matter of a Jedi seeing the bullet and moving. He knows when and where you will be shopting, and simply chooses not to be there. Or to stop the bullet before it reaches him. If they can toss around major hunks of metal, they can surely create an area where things stop.

Also, perhaps Lukes astonishment is from something other than the precise control. Maybe the emperor has some kick as BO that wafted over, or maybe he simultaneously force goosed Luke, or attempted some sort of mind control that was unexpected.

45. Compelling arguments, I admit. However...
It can't be a dramatic reenactment. If it were, the real Vader would fly here ASAP and strangle Hayden and Lucas, though perhaps not in that order.

We never see any evidence of real-time precognition, other than the say-so of a few Jedi, whose testimony about Force-powers can hardly be called objective. Also, it's easier to lift an object weighing fifty pounds than it is to catch something that lands in your arms with an equivalent force of fifty pounds, because you're not braced for it, etc. I suspect that the same is true of Force-lifting and Force-stopping; you can lift a droid or an X-Wing or a UFO-shaped Senate seat, but catching something moving at 2700 fps is a different matter.

Having said all of that, I have no refutation for your posited Force-goose, so I concede that point.

49. Long time ago
And the re-enacted the death of Vader, so it would have to be his great great xxxx who came to strangle us lucas, hayden, and so, so many fan fiction writers.

Unless you want to ascribe time travel to be among his many powers.

I dont have an argument on the precognition, although they do seem to be generally very good at having those light sabers out and going before anything dangerous makes contact with them, with the obvious exception of clone troopers. However, I remain certain that Yoda, for instance, would be a step or two ahead of anyone attempting to take him down with something so mundane as rapidly moving lead pellets.

... why they just didn't make a whopping big, starship-mounted light saber mounted on some kind of transversing system and just use the 2,000-mile-long blade to chop up the enemy ships.

That forcefield/containment is the sticking point, innit though.

If I had that part, I wouldn't really care if it was in a well make container such as yours, or stuffed into an emptied out Mag light body. It would be awesome.

So, do you build any functionality into yours(eg, flashlight, zip gun, over sized mechanical pencil)?

but that was right around the point where I ran out of money and stopped making them for a while.

If I can find a good semi-transparent tube the right size I could start making them with light-up blades. Also I need to find more colors of LEDs. The only superbright ones that Radio Shack has are red.
