Cartoon Network is making more live-action shows? (WTF?)
Yup.

Cartoon Network ditching all-'toon format By Tim Surette03/25/09 4:06 PM205 comments \ add yoursCable station no longer living up to its name, will get in to live-action reality shows, scripted programs.

First MTV stops showing music videos, now this? Cartoon Network is sticking with the "Network" portion of its name, but ditching the strictly "Cartoon" bit, the company announced today. Nineteen new projects were announced, and less than half will be hand-drawn.

"These exciting new projects represent the next phase in Cartoon Network's ambitious, ongoing strategy to re-invent the network and re-energize our youth business overall," said Stuart Snyder.

These new non-cartoons will start airing in the coming 2009-2010 season and feature reality and scripted programs, most of which sound like pint-sized versions of programs currently airing on other networks.

Highlights: The Othersiders is a mini-Ghost Hunters, with five friends exploring scary places; Destroy Build Destroy is like Human Wrecking Balls, with two teams blowing stuff up; Dude, What Would Happen is a Mythbusters clone; Bobb'e Says takes the ridiculously funny child actor Bobb'e J. Thompson (Human Giant, Role Models) in his own take of America's Funniest Home Videos.

2. While I would like the idea
of a competing group of animators trying to come up with an idea for an animated series as a reality show, I really can't see anything else working on Cartoon Network. By the way, I've got a great idea for an animated series...

Sorry, for some reason, I've got Fisher Stevens/Ben Jabituya on the mind tonight.

5. Reality television is a virus
It's already infected the major networks and classic cable channels such as History, Discovery, MTV, etc. and don't get me started on what it's done to TLC.

6. MTV was patient zero for that virus, at least in the US
Otherwise, I agree. "Reality" programming is the worst thing to happen in the history of broadcast television, even including After M*A*S*H*, Cop Rock and Small Wonder.

7. "Patient zero" LOL
Although medical records indicate a possible earlier case of a less virulent strain on PBS called "An American Family".

10. I believe that the PBS program was an isolated outbreak
Actually, I'd never even heard of that one, so it was news to me.

The very first time I saw The Real World I thought "this is crap." And I was right.

One thousand reality shows later, my opinion still hasn't changed, and I'm still right!

9. I forgot Bravo
which is probably the worst offender of them all. Used to be classy, airing the performing arts, dramas, indie films, etc. Now it's fashion and celebrity makeovers wall to wall except for the occasional West Wing rerun.

I swear, the only reason I keep my cable is for sports. With Hulu and similar sites, I can watch what I want, when I want and that doesn't include reality tv. I will dump cable once I can either a) watch games reliably over the internets or b) give up my addiction to college football.

I just read that the Academy of TV Arts and Sciences is going to start handing out Emmys for best reality show which makes me want to hit myself in the head with a hammer.

12. You just gave me a great idea for a reality TV program.
How about following people around town who do stuff to try to get on the evening news. Rob banks, burn down buildings, etc. First person to get a story on the national news wins the program.

8. TV execs don't believe their station's titles mean anything
that's why the CARTOON network does live TV while the HISTORY channel does mostly reality TV

11. If people dropped cable, would that get cartoon network to go under?
People got these cable channels for what they advertise. Cartoons. Not more sodding "reality" shows.

As if I care, cable was overpriced BS when I dropped it 5 years ago -- a DVD a month is preferable.

16. So between Cartoon Network showing lots of live-action and Sci-Fi showing professional wrestling...
and of course, cable news networks showing propoganda...

It's no wonder I haven't missed having a TV since I moved. :P

17. If they're looking for programming, why don't they show the old cartoons.
There used to be a lot of great cartoons that you never see on TV anymore. When the cartoon network first started, I was looking forward to getting to see all the old cartoons again. (I didn't have that station on cable back then, so I have no idea if they ever did that or not.)

20. It wasn't that bad...........
well, except for T-Pain and that dude who played Carl. I liked Jon Benjamin's Shake and psychotic Meatwad/exercise-ball.

The ending left me a confused tho.

21. i just don't know what they were trying to do
i kept priming myself for a big laugh which never came (at least on the live-action parts)...they had this one opportunity to do something really special and didn't...

when Tim and Eric do something off-kilter (by their standards) they come up with fun stuff like "Tennis" and "Cinco Brothers"...and this is what the ATHF crew comes up with?? I know they are SO much better than that....
