Does Susan Boyle's loss mean we'll finally stop hearing about her?
Edited on Sun May-31-09 01:29 AM by Zavulon
Christ, I hope so.

This is not a shot at her fans here on DU (I know there was recently at least one big argument on this board about the Boyle thing), I'm just wondering if there's a light at the end of the tunnel for those who don't give a shit about the whole issue.

By the way, am I the only one who doesn't give a fuck about Boyle's appearances on a show I don't watch / who is tired of hearing about them?

2. If you don't want to hear about her, just stop listening.
Christ, it's not hard. Don't click on threads, don't start threads, change the channel when she comes on the news. What the Hell do you need to start a thread about it for? "Not a shot at her fans?" Of course it's a shot at her fans, who else are you insulting?

7. not to get too far into the arguement...
but she is rather omnipresent these days. Hell, even all the progressive talk radio people are talking about her a hell of a lot more than they should be. While I'm not a hater, and wish her success in her future endeavors, it would be nice to be able to hear about something newsworthy on the sources I keep my ear on for news...

9. I concur, and...
I wish that news outlets would stop airing lengthy commercials of American Idol instead of running actual news. This will wane temporarily, of course, now that the finale has played out, but during the season it seems that every news program has to run long commentaries on the previous night's developments as well as the "human interest" stories about this or that contestant.

It's shit. All of it.

3. You sure give enough shit to bother posting about it
just because you dislike a show does not mean you can piss at people who want to discuss it on a public board .

Not interested about something , don't post about it , or participate in its threads .

29. It was just curiousity.
Edited on Sun May-31-09 09:01 PM by Zavulon
The only place I actually hear about her is HERE, and unfortunately DU doesn't have a function which allows me to enter two words ("Susan Boyle") and have any threads containing them not show up on my feed.

By the way, your "just because you dislike a show does not mean you can piss at people who want to discuss it on a public board" is completely wrong - I most certainly can, until the admins tell me otherwise. If you have a problem with it, why not contact them and tell them I offended your delicate sensibilities?

18. The contrarians...
I've been quite baffled at how much energy some folks on DU spend tearing down Susan Boyle. Maybe this explains it...

There's a huge contrarian streak in popular culture. Being the only person to hate something everyone else likes can bring you attention that other people aren't getting. It can be a status symbol, a sign that you see what others don't, or just a mark of your individuality and your independence -- "I'm no media-led sheep; I hate Susan Boyle!" As the meaning of something is inflated beyond any significance it ever should have had, cutting it back down to size becomes both easier and more appetizing.

23. That's the way I am about that Jon and Kate train wreck.
I had never heard of them until I saw it on DU and still couldn't figure out what the hell it was about or who they were.

Still not quite certain about them, but now I see them in the grocery shelves all the time.:P

I'm curious, socially. Would she have received as much hype if she were drop dead gorgeous?

I wonder about the weirdest things.

28. No.
Susan Boyle is a social media phenomenon.

Susan Boyle is a TV production and media manipulation phenomenon.

Susan Boyle is, however, a real person who spent most of her life under the radar and defined by others.

Susan Boyle can really sing.

Susan Boyle has a disability that has prevented and will prevent her from becoming a conventional star.

Susan Boyle seized her own personal moment that was long overdue. After competing in many talent competitions, she was shown to the world... And, she captured the hearts and minds of a large population of open-minded strangers.

Britain's Got Talent manipulated her moment into a 7 minute reality television masterwork. (We laughed, we cried, we felt better about ourselves, and wanted to share with others).

The world enjoyed her 7 minute YouTube drama (This will be written about for years to come because it took Britain's Got Talent producters by surprise).

Susan Boyle is real and has challenged our assumptions on many levels... That's why she is important.

I fear her story will end sadly.

don't we?

(just thought I'd make your day by giving you a target even more worthy than Ms Boyle, though if she ever performed "Rocky Raccoon" I'm sure it'd be your Perfect Storm Of Pop Culture)

32. ‘Drained’ Susan Boyle treated for exhaustion
Edited on Mon Jun-01-09 10:16 AM by meow2u3
LONDON - Singer Susan Boyle was being treated for exhaustion at a mental health clinic Monday after taking second place in a TV talent competition that turned the humble church volunteer into a global star, the show’s producers and a newspaper said.

Boyle was admitted to London’s Priory Clinic on Sunday, a day after she finished behind a male dance group on the show “Britain’s Got Talent,” the Sun newspaper reported.

“Nobody has had to put up with the kind of attention Susan has had. Nobody could have predicted it,” one of the show’s judges, Piers Morgan, told breakfast TV show GMTV. “It has been crazy, she has gone from anonymity to being the most downloaded woman in history.”

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31039896/

Does this answer your question? It looks as if she had a nervous breakdown from all the press she's been getting. The British media makes the American MSM look kind and gentle by comparison. I saw it on the Today show this morning.

meow2u3's question: I wonder if Susan Boyle has some form of autistic spectrum disorder. That might explain her social awkwardness and the fact she cracked under the pressure of the press.

35. I have yet to hear her sing
I have not seen the YouTube clip, I have not seen her in any coverage of what little TV I watch (unless she shows up at a Lakers or Dodgers game) - I just haven't been part of this whole hype/praise/brouhaha/media roller coaster ride/DU flame wars mess.

Therefore, I have NO opinion of her. She is a clean slate.
