Blah! I have to go to a baby shower for a girl that I don't know!
Edited on Sun May-31-09 10:59 AM by Shell Beau
I know her mom. And her mom gave me wonderful gifts at my baby shower, so I have to go.

This girl got pregnant by a friend. He wanted her to abort or give up for adoption. She is only 19, so she has a long road ahead. She isn't really working right now. She's had a tough life. She was adopted (that is a great thing, but I know it has effects on her), her father went to federal prison for taking millions of dollars from clients (think of the Bernies),she went from being a millionaire to having nothing, she has a learning disorder, and now she is pregnant.

So, I shouldn't be complaining because she needs any and all support. But I hate showers. Even my own I hated.

1. oh my
that does suck. I really dislike the silly games that are played. Anyway, try to enjoy yourself.

That poor kid though. Talk about a life changer and she's already gone through so much.

3. so glad I'm a man
I'd be bummed all week if I had to attend a baby shower.

Guess I'm a grump, weddings are a pain in the ass too.

4. I know what you mean, but try to make the best of it
I have a friend from childhood who I only saw once when we were older, after moving from her town when I was five. We went on a little trip with our moms when we were were thirteen, and got along really well. Later we were both married and she was having problems getting pregnant. She and her husband adopted a baby girl. A couple of months later my friend got pregnant, had two biological daughters within a few years. Fast forward...the adopted daughter got pregnant in her late teens. I wonder if she felt not quite as loved, not quite a part of the family, though I know my friend and her family loved her.

I hope the girl the shower is for can find some new mom friends around her age so she won't feel isolated. Our culture romanticizes having babies so much, but it can be kind of lonely unless you have a partner or supportive family and friends.

5. I have always found a roll of duct tape to be the perfect gift in situations like this one.
There is NOTHING quite like explaining the use of duct tape in parenting to loosen up a crowd of misty eyed women who are determined to be sappy at a baby shower.

That is a perfect intro to my personal favorite baby shower game of "Worst Parenting Advice" commonly known as "What DCFS doesn't know is probably a good thing..." That game has turned up gems like, "ALWAYS put a vomiting kid in your bed to keep warm while you change the bed they just threw up in," and "Just ignore that immunization schedule and give that kid all the shots the week before Kindergarten--that way they'll still be fresh."

I tend to throw pretty interesting baby showers.

6. That was my story (except for the not working part and the father part)
Sometimes things turn out okay, at least for awhile. Good on you!

11. I have to go to a bridal shower for a girl that I don't know!
Edited on Sun May-31-09 06:42 PM by Kat45
The only person I know is the mother of the groom. I met the groom, and his sister, when they were teenagers but I don't know them either. I'm not even sure why I'm invited to this wedding, though I can't complain much because I don't really have family and family events around any more. I can enjoy a wedding, but showers---meh.
