Hemingway, I posit, was full of crap.
That line from Ten Indians?

"In the morning there was a big wind blowing and the waves were running high up on the beach and he was awake a long time before he remembered that his heart was broken."

Absolute bullshit. You remember right away.

'Morning. :hi:

1. maybe not
if your hangover is really, really bad and all you can think about is how every cell in your body hurts -- and how is it you can suddenly feel every cell in your body and why is it you can only feel them when you are this hung over, and what was it you did that you now can't remember and how big is the list of people that you have to apologise to and why oh why does every cell in your body hurt so bad and god i'd lay down but that feels worse...

3. Papa H. is the favorite choice for translation assignments!
Funny you should bring this up!
In grad school, Language majors love to "tackle" Hemingway for translation assignments because the man's style, syntax, and vocabulary are Bush* league!

Look at the example you cite. LOL!

5. Hemingway was NOT a pioneer...he was a man who hung around
with a great many pioneers--F Scott and Gertrude Stein, et al, and learned from them.

9. I agree
if your heart is truly broken, you wake up feeling the same as when you went to sleep.

10. see, I don't agree
when something cathes your attention, you can forget, for only an instant, that your heart is broken, and that instant can be a long time without pain. What's the old line about going to the sea to forget?

11. Have you ever seen "The Moderns"?
Written & directed by Alan Rudolph, it's set in Paris Between The Wars. The major characters are Keith Carradine as an artist, Wallace Shawn as a gossip columnist, John Lone as a rubber tycoon interested in acquiring beautiful things, and Linda Fiorentino as Lone's wife--or is she really Carradine's? There is a plot, but I'm a sucker for movies with good visuals & good music--which Alan Rudolph's best ones definitely deliver. This is one of the best.

Of course, "real" characters also make their appearance. Gertrude Stein & Alice B Toklas in their art-filled apartment. And Hemingway--as a bit of a dork.

Definitely recommended for anybody with an interest in the period. Especially if they don't mind seeing a not-too-bright Hemingway.

15. I remember waking up with a broken heart...
and there was a second...a mere breath...when I was waking up in the normal way. Then it all comes crashing back, like a stone falling on your chest: life as you know it is over, utterly over.

Nope...can't imagine lying there a long time not remembering that your heart is broken.

Also agree Hemingway was a hack.
