Mondays IN The Undergroundrailroad for March 15, 2004

Mondays 'IN' The Undergroundrailroad

Hello everybody and welcome to MONDAYS 'IN'! I am back from vacation and I missed you! We have so much to look forward to in this Presidential election year! Today for our dessert in the UGRR, will be a warm peach cobbler with generous scoops of vanilla bean ice-cream. The recipe title is called Busy Day Peach Cobbler. It is very easy to make and it's a comfort food, comfort in the form of the busy twists and turns that will be taking place in this election. Doesn't it look good?

I'm looking forward to saying hello to the regulars (affectionately called the "bunch") in the UGRR but I want to hear from new members as well! I will roll out the red carpet, literally, and give you a proper welcome.

So let's get to it and thanks for dropping in to say hello!

Millie-Christine
____________________________________________________________________________________

The date is July 11, 1851 and the place is a remote North Carolina farm. A birth was taking place that night in the slave quarters, a mud shack, where loud screams could be heard just before dawn. The scream was not that of the mother, but of the black midwife, over what she had just brought forward. Was it one baby or two? The baby had four legs, four arms, and two heads. Quickly, a preacher was brought in to look at what was being called a "strange curiosity" . Everyone had their opinion of the two girl babies, born into slavery. As word spread about the miraculous birth, locals trekked across swamps and marshland to the North Carolina farm to see the girls. They'd never seen twins connected to each other at the lower spine, sharing two heads, four arms, four legs and one pelvis. Their parents, Jacob and Monemia, "property" of slaver owner and blacksmith, Jabez McKay, loved the girls the moment they saw them. Monemia held her sweet, beautiful daughter tight. She rocked and kissed her calling her "my baby". Her parents named her Millie-Christine and as far as they were considered Millie-Christine was ONE child.

Of course their "master", Mr. McKay, had other ideas. He saw TWO babies, they were *HIS* property and the girls were "freaks" of nature. He started to make inquiries. So at age two they were wrenched from their mother and sold to showman, J.P. Smith for 30,000.00, a huge sum of money at that time. Then he sold her parents, Jacob and Monemia. The sooner he got them out of the way the better!

But news was traveling fast about the famous girls and a rival showman kidnapped the twins, still children, and discreetly exhibited them all over the country. There were private viewings, freak shows and fairs. They were billed as "The Two-Headed Nightingale", "The United African Twins", and "The Eight Wonders of the World". Their owner, J.P. Smith, had now hired a private investigator to track the girls down, his property. But the girls were now in England where slavery had long since been abolished. J.P Smith could no longer say that the girls were his "property". He tried another approach. He purchased their parents, Jacob and Monemia. This group traveled to England to locate Millie-Christine and J.P. Smith reunited the girls, now age four, with their mother. Millie-Christine returned to the United States and were given a first class education. They learned how to read, compose sheet music, became accomplished pianists (duets), singers (Millie was contralto, Christine a soprano) and developed a graceful way to walk and dance sideways. Millie-Christine became fluent in five languages; German, Italian, Spanish, Russian and French. During this time it was against the law to teach a slave to read much less learn other foreign languages, but Mr. and Mrs. Smith were reluctant slaver owners, and considered them family members.

Of course, there was a dark side to this "strange curiosity" and as the girls developed into women their joint bodies were subjected to prurient interrogation. Practically everywhere they went, doctors gave them demeaning physical examinations to prove they weren't a fraud. Barely 5 feet tall, they reportedly could command some $25,000 a season on the county fair circuit. A huge sum of money for that time. Among countless cheerful publicity photos, they decided to pose for one single evocative picture, semi-nude. In that photograph, Millie glowers at the camera. The more accommodating Christine bows her head in shame. Soon the girls, now mature and savvy business managers of their own careers, put a stop to the physical examinations. They now understood that some of the repeated examinations were nothing more than sexual curiosity of both the doctors and the viewing public. Countless photographs and drawings were surfacing that described in great detail the anatomy of their bodies and they did not want their sexuality to be the focus of their shows. Instead, they showcased their extreme talents. Queen Victoria was so impressed with their performance, she gave them diamond hairpins, which adorned their hair in many photographs.

They performed until they were 58 years old. In later pictures, they looked exhausted.

Just a week after their 61st birthday, on Oct. 8, 1912, Millie died of tuberculosis. Christine lay beside her singing hymns and praying. She stopped breathing 17 hours later.

The grave site was guarded because relatives feared scientists would steal their remains.

On their tombstone, these words are inscribed:

"A soul with two thoughts. Two hearts that beat as one."
They developed a motto "As God decreed, we agreed" and truly loved each other.

Peach cobbler - one of my favorite desserts. Gotta have some homemade vanilla ice cream to go with it! :9

Great information as usual on a fascinating pair! :-)

1. Lets see: my CDs, gate key for apartment driveway, floor mats, sunglasses, assorted scraps of paper and owner's manual stuff. Oh, some Kleenex and business cards, too. Edit - I haven't even gotten to the trunk! LOL...tons of stuff in there. A couple pair of golf shoes and my clubs.

2. You don't want me singing - I'd clear the room!

3. Drop me back off at 18. I'd correct a lot of things! Although, I have to say that where I ended up isn't all bad.

18. And as always, you get the honorary first spot! Hello my friend, ((hug)).
Now you know I'm going to comment on the golf cart being your avatar! Ohhhh that is so cool. When ever I see the cart I think of you, always.

So you like peach cobbler. The next time I make it, I'm going to make one for you, freeze it and send the dish FedEx. I'm an expert wrapper and they have a dish that you can bake it in with a snap on top. It will be nice and fresh when you receive it. All you have to do is add your ice-cream.

I'll send you a pm when I bake.

Now, let me check you out.

In your car? CDs, gate key for the beautiful "gated" communities, floor mats, sunglasses, assorted scrap's of paper, owner's manuals business card, and LOL, we haven't even got to the trunk!

Where's the golf cart? ;-)

No singing for you but turn your CD volume WAY WAY UP, then you can jam to the tunes.

A redo at age 18. I agree, I love you just the way you are (la, la, la,lalala.)

Thanks for stopping in and taking your honorary first spot !

Love,

Mina  :loveya:

19. Happy Monday Proud Patriot! Thanks for the fabulous job you do
moderating the DU lounge.

Thanks for stopping in to say hello my friend.

So let's see. I would find Cd's and money in your car. Wow, you will be the life of the party singing Hand In My Pocket by Alanis Morrisette. If you could return to another age, 13 is the number! That would be the number I would like to return to also.

Once again, thanks for stopping in and thanks for the terrific job you do moderating the lounge.

Love,

21. Hello La_Serpiente (a beautiful name). Yes, I had a brief rest and worked
on several projects. Thanks for dropping in La_Serpiente to say hello and check things out in the UGRR.

So, there is a shirt in your car. Actually, I carry a set of clothing in my ride. One must always be prepared. I also love the tune, Time of My Life which takes you back a few steps to age 16! But 19 is a great jumping off point for doing so many things. Me thinks you're going to have a wonderful life and you deserve it.

I have a question. The picture in your signature line, who is that? Very handsome picture indeed.

Well, thanks La_Serpiente for stopping in to say hello to me.

Love,

Mina  :loveya:

Thank you so much for stopping in to check things out. I would like everyone to know that RoadRunner is one of our new moderators and is doing a great job!

I love Hung's version of She Bangs, She Bangs!

There is a song by Jr. Walker and the All Stars called I'm a Road Runner. I used to put that jam on in my car while driving (with the top down, of course!), ohhhh that was so much fun!

Thanks so much RoadRunnder for stopping in to say hello today. I look forward to seeing you again in the Undergroundrailroad.

5. Woo hoo! PEACH! PEACH! PEACH!
Nice to meet you. I am the Great Grape Ape's third cousin, the Popular Peach Platypus!

Geez, conjoined twins stories always give me the creeps. One can't begin to fathom how hard these girls' lives must have been -- with the added "boon" of being born slaves. Holy @#%$!!!

Ok, the questions:

1) No car. I'm happy to live in a city with viable public transportation (Rio).
2) Hmmm... "Crystal" by New Order. "Enjoy the Silence" by Depeche Mode. Nothing that demands TOO much voice.
3) If I came back to anywhere before July 2000, my youngest kid wouldn't exist. So... maybe I'd travel to Florida in early September 2001 and get a gun.

What an amazing story about Millie-Christine. It's hard to imagine their/her family keeping her privacy today. Scientists would be all over them.

1. I have a thing of Altoid's, a pen and paper, and a couple books. I also have some emergency things in the trunk.

2. "Hey Jude" (na na na na)

3. 13 - my eighth grade year

8. Glad to see you!
:hi: back from my business trip all last week. Had to do a rushed software evaluation for my telecomm equipment at the manufacturer's site.

I hadn't heard of the story of Millie-Christine. I need to study more history, since that one got past me.

Now for your questions:

1) do you mean the car's components, like engine, fuel injectors, alternator, spark plugs, distributor cap, air filter, fuel filter, etc., or the junk I have in the back seat?

2) I've sung karaoke several times. Those nights, for some reason, seem to be the same night as bar special night. Haven't figured out why that is... Like the MC says, "the more you drink, the better I sound!"

Some of my selections were La Bamba, Born to be Wild, Baby Got Back, She Drives Me Crazy.

3) I'd go back to my late 20's so I could be young and fit and play soccer without everything hurting for 2 days.

Always glad to see you, Mina! You make Mondays fun!

10. My sweetest Mina, so good to see you on Monday, Monday.
I hope you had a good rest and may I welcome you back to Mondays. I really missed you and resorted to my copied editions of previous Mondays IN The UGRR.

I must tell you that you have a talent for finding the most unusual people to talk about because I have never heard of Millie-Christine. They were beautiful. But I can only imagine the manner in which they were taken advantaged of. It's truly a fascinating story and I will purchase the book.

OK, now to the questions (as I dream of peach cobbler :-)

1. In my car I have about 1 or 2 Cd's, my briefcase, books, window cleaner, pens, newspaper and unread mail.

2. I can't sing but I like to carry a tune. I like all the Motown songs.

3. When I was seventeen, it was a very good year ;-)

Have a great week Mina, take care of yourself. Shout out to my fellow DUers
in the UG today.

Wow, that cobbler looks scrumptious! I may run over to the store right now so I can make it for dinner. I think I'll try it with one can pie filling, one can sliced peaches. I think that would give it a nice texture.

OK, here we go:

1. What's in my car? Too much crap to even start mentioning.

2. Karaoke? Blue Velvet. I like Blue Velvet. Meat movie, too.

3. Age? Sixteen. Not quite old enough to know better.

12. Hello Mina and welcome back. Love that peach cobbler!
What an interesting article about Millie-Christine. Thanks for the photos. It must have been very difficult with the medical challenges that they faced. It seems that the second owner treated them well. Nevertheless, in spite of the obstacles, they were very talented. I'm going to order the book today.

Questions:

1. I only have my booklets of ownership, water and my purse. I don't carry that much in the car.

2. I can't sing a note.

3. 21

Have a great rest of the week Mina and DU.

Questions Of The Day

1. How many things can you name in your car right now?

2. What song would you sing KARAOKE on?

3. If you could return to any age in your life, what would it be?

14. Hey there, UGRR!
Great to have you back on Mondays! You were missed.

Thanks for the story of Millie-Christine. I don't remember ever reading anything about them.

1) I have so much crap in my car I can't begin to list it. I do know there are tons of Kerry posters in the trunk.

2) I have a cassette of me singing "Leader of the Pack" many moons ago when karaoke first became popular. :D I haven't been near a karaoke bar since.

3) I'm happy with myself right now. I did once think that the year I was 40 was the best year but they've only been improving. I don't want to go back, even though I'd love to get my father's ideas on current politics. I miss him.

16. Hello Mina,
That's a sad story of human exploitation. I sometimes wonder if Darwin was dead wrong, for we don't seem to be evolving much. :(

1. How many things can you name in your car right now?

-Um, I got some bungee cords in the back. Other than that, it's pretty spartan. (By the way, if you wanna see my new truck, click here.

2. What song would you sing KARAOKE on?

-I don't know the words to Karaoke. Sorry.

3. If you could return to any age in your life, what would it be?

-I probably wouldn't. I like myself just the way I am. :D

Millie-Christine. What sweet, talented people they were. Tough too to have survived all that. Thank you for letting me learn about them.

Mail,
groceries,
School of Rock DVD,
Bins:
- recyclables
- motor oil and anti-freeze
- jumper cables and tire iron

2. What song would you sing KARAOKE on?

Both Sides Now. Judy Collins does the best version, I think but I'm not Judy Collins. LOL! I'm from the Rosie O'Donnell school of singing... not very well but with a great deal of enthusiasm. Music makes me feel good. :D

Millie_Christine were amazing women. Thanks for sharing their story.

2. Several..Bring the late 70s back. Not really, but I know those songs.

3. I guess I would return to my late 20s if I had to. I'm happy now though and don't want to return to a previous age.

Great article this week. The story of Millie-Christine was fascinating and mirrors some of what I know of the famous Barnum twins Chang and Eng Bunker. I simply cannot imagine living an entire life physically joined to another person; let alone joined to another person and on display for the public. At least they were able to earn enough money to eventually live confortably, and their eductaion is one to be envied even today.

Such an amazing story.

And for the answers to today's quiz:

1. How many things can you name in your car right now?

All of them :)

But seriously, I have a third of a pack of peppermint gum, a wool jacket, two CD jewel cases (for blank CDs), two books (one on Medieval History and one titled A Short Victorious War by David Eddings), one G-Love and Special Sauce cassette tape (in the deck) my spare car key (shhh don't tell anyone), miscellaneous gas slips and scraps of paper. And in the trunk: a gas can, a spare headlight, a blanket, several old National Geographic magazines, pieces of a long-sold jeep, three books on Instructional Design, one portfolio of my design work.

2. What song would you sing KARAOKE on?

"Mack the Knife". I am a sucker for the Three Penny Opera.

3. If you could return to any age in your life, what would it be?

Hmmmmm.... can't really say. I am happier now than I've ever been so I guess, I'd return to today.

1. 3-handi wipes, kleenex, and an umbrella.

2. Hmmmmmmm....Imagine, I think.

3. 19. The year I first met my husband...and I'd do it all right this time.

Mina, You are the very best!

35. I'm late!
How could I have missed this yesterday? Great thread, Mina! Loved to hear the story about Millie-Christine.

:hi:

1. How many things can you name in your car right now?

2. What song would you sing KARAOKE on?

3. If you could return to any age in your life, what would it be?

(1) Lots 'o junk

(2) None. I don't sing in public! ;-)

(3) Mid-20s. But I don't have a strong desire for that. I'm doing fine now. :-)

Happy Tuesday!

Peter
