Jesus, seems like everybody's getting the damn worm.
I got it last night from I don't know what, and the more I read the documentation on it (I note that I first figured out what I had thanks to Elad, who came out and said something akin to "You have a virus, sucka!")

Thankfully, I have a Mac and am downloading both a one-shot solution and Microsoft's patch. None of the workarounds I've tried have worked.

While I'm at it, I'm also downloading the Neverwinter Nights patch. Thank God for CD burners.

1. Had people heeded the warnings and downloaded the patch
this may not have been such a big deal.

2. I have Win98,
so i'm not getting it any day soon, thank god...

Do you have the expansion for Neverwinter? My friend has it and i've played a little bit of the original on his computer, but i've only played around with the toolset since he got the expansion. If you have it, how is it? And should I get around to playing it?

6. Please excuse us Mac owners, but...
we can't help rejoicing a bit in never having viruses, and never having popups!

The best PC made. No, really.

20. The reason for no viruses is that there aren't enough
Mac owners to even screw with writing a Mac virus.

8. I don't have the expansion, no.
I just recently got ahold of the main game, but one of my friends has Shadows and says that it adds a lot to the game (such as Greater Globe spells, which is insanely overpowered -- something like 38d6 of damage from a 7th level spell). He's been pressuring me to get it.

I think I'll go through the main game first, though.

I think I've cured it but I'm not sure how I cured it. I've downloaded about 6 different fixes! Nasty little thing.

7. People say to find the file msblast.exe
How to you find that file????

They mentioned to go to taskmaster... is that the box that comes up when you hit cntrl-alt-delete to see what is running?

I am not sure where to look for this.....I don't seem to be having any problems.

I have MS Millenium Edition -- and apparently it doesn't need the patch, and quite a few other patches as well. They seemed to get something partly right with ME.

10. Yeah.
Hit control alt delete, go over a tab (to processes, I believe) and find MSBlast and hit end task. Then you go to regedit (warning: BE FUCKING CAREFUL IN REGEDIT) and delete it there too. Not that it does anything -- I've done that a few times already to no avail.

I downloaded the patch, and everything seems to be ok now, but it's still showing up in my "System32" folder.. can I go in there and delete it?

13. What is REGEDIT??
and I will be fucking careful!!!

Bill Gates should have to send every single person who has MS OS $300 for the time we have to waste dicking around with his crappy product.

I can't believe no one has started a class action suit against MS.

All these HOLES in the program were designed this way from the very, very beginning of time. Bill Gates saw an empire in the making...and he wanted to make damn sure that HE could get into our computers in the high tech future (which is now!) so HE could keep track of HIS customers.

so...he started out with a crappy insecure operating system and he has just added layer upon layer on top of the crappy foundation......

Short of just scrapping this OS...there isn't much we can do about it.

And so nice that MS got the contract to do all the computers in homeland security. oooooooo, I feel sooooo safe! At least when the fascists take over, some of our revolutionary computer geeks will be able to tap into big brother's system and expose the fascists for who they are!

18. What is REGEDIT??
IF you have to ask this question hire a professional! Damnit!

Throw us a bone here folks! Think of all those out of work IT people that need the work!

I'm only being partly humurouse here. If you don't know what Regedit is and have never worked in the registry DON"T! What it will cost you to have someone come out and do the owrk will be much less than having to have someone come out and fix what you broke!

The lesson I hope everyone has learned her is to back up there data!

And on this subject I heard a funny last night on the news...Some AOL looser says "I geuss I'll be more carefull about doing Windows Update, that will protect us!"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

With peoiple like this why can't I find work in my field!?!

Zizzer, most of my repeat customers use Win 95 and or 98 or Mac's...damnit!

12. We got it the moment we connected our new computer to the internet.
My dad was trying to hook up the computer and once he got online, it kept messing up and we had to go to the old computer to find out how to fix it. I don't think that this is a good sign for the new computer, though it did come with Age of Empires II on it.

14. The value of a decent firewall
Edited on Wed Aug-13-03 02:02 AM by laconicsax
I go online, I do whatever, and log off. I go in later and check the logs, and find that the firewall did it's job and blocked all of the port as the worm tried to get in.

I'm getting hit by attempts about ever 15 seconds by the logs too.

On Edit: I should also point out that the Windows Update feature in XP had the patch a couple days after the whole thing was announced--mid July. If you go to add/remove programs and see XP Hotfix KB823980 in the list of installed programs, then you already have the patch for XP. If you've been ignoring the little thing saying that updates are ready to install, click it and see if KB823980 is in there and install it, but still follow whatever directions there are to kill the worm if you already have it.

I like the auto-update feature for critical patches.....I've got the Hotfix you refer to. I haven't had any problems with this worm.

17. When you live in a computer monoculture, one good bug kills everyone.
It's exactly analagous to life in the real world. If you're all
genetically identical, then one good bug kills everyone in the
species.

Nearly all of you run the computers with nearly-identical DNA,
so when an effective bug comes along, all your computers die
of it. Plus, your computers' DNA has a pathetically weak immune
system to begin with.

Years ago, folks were discussingthis when it was mostly theoretical.
Now the practical realityhas hit and hit hard.

Improve your immunity: don't run Windows.
