'50 worst artists in music history': Blender must suck, what a stupid list
Music's dinosaurs live on in Hall of Shame

Mick Jagger has been named alongside Michael Bolton and Celine Dion as one of the 50 worst artists in music history.

Paul Oakenfold, Bob Geldof and cult band The Doors also made the list compiled by US music magazine Blender.

Blender's editor, Andy Pemberton, said: "If I were any of these groups, I would be angry about making the list - but they should be better. It's their fault they're on it."

Kansas?!? APP?!? I'd love to see what Mr. Pemberton listens to.

1. Most of the list is spot-on
But Oakenfold and The Doors? Bullshit. And while I'm not a fan of Jagger, he surely doesn't merit a place on the list either.

11. I agree with most of the list (including the Doors being on it)
Edited on Wed Aug-13-03 07:50 AM by Michael Daniels
As someone who listened to the Doors through high school and college and went through a Morrison-esque phase I now find the Doors to be highly overrated. With the exception of the first and last albums Morrison's "poetry" (as he saw his lyrics) reads horribly on paper without the music behind it and the music itself is nothing spectacular on it's own.

They were the right band for their time but if a band like them came out now they probably wouldn't be much of a blip on the screen.

Love was a much better band anyway and "Forever Changes" beats anything The Doors put out.

28. Overrated is one thing...
... 50 worst of all time is entirely different.

But, heck, I'm sure Blender is getting better sales on the issue by throwing in some controversial choices.

37. How Oakenfold got on it is beyond me
I've had the pleasure of seeing him at both a stadium (RFK in DC) and in a club (Buzz in DC) and both times were incredible.

2. Bullshit
This list is nothing more than junior giving a raspberry to his parent's music collection.

Any list such as this that doesn't include Tiny Tim or the Ohio Express has no credibility.

3. What!....
How can you say that the group that put out "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy, I've got love in my tummy" should be on the list ?
(Sarcasm off) :)

I agree with what you say and also....The Archies (which weren't even a real group...just studio musicians)

4. Huh?
Emerson, Lake & Palmer made the list and Britney Spears didn't? Most of the bands on that list are just mildly offensive...how the hell did N'Sync, the Backstreet Boys and anyone who was ever on American Idol stay off this?

12. I have to agree - there are far worse out there than Alan Parsons Project
I love love LOVE Alan Parsons Project, especially their "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" album. You compare APP to any of these canned boy bands or woman-child teases and I can't imagine why APP is on that list and yet Spears, InSync, New Kids on the Block, Spice Girls, Christina Aguhoweveryouspellherlastname isn't on the list.

It's a schlock magazine that is putting a few legends on its list to get folks to read it. (not that I'm saying APP is, but geez - Mick Jaggar and the Doors???!!!)

Nuff said!

PS - how dare they put The Hooters on there - I love them too!

7. I'm pretty sure it's mostly satirical and just tweaking people....
And if any person doesn't think that Jagger's horrid solo work, as well as pretentious prog rock boobs like Kansas and the Doors for Jim Morrison's awful poetry alone don't deserve to be on any such list then they are either:

A)Over age 45
B)Deaf
C)Take themselves way too seriously

And for the record I enjoy the work of Kansas AND the Doors, and I'm guessing more than a few other bands/artists on that list. But anyone who still thinks most of these bands have any relevance in this day and age is sorely mistaken. God, look at any videos or live performances of Kansas from the 70's and sit down and seriously read Morrison's lyrics and tell me they aren't just as laughable as the Nelson twins or a bunch of dudes dressed in Clown makeup and rapping.

.. but "worst 50?" not even close. :)

What about

Air Supply
Spice Girls
Celine Dion
Hootie and the Blowfish
Garth Brooks (he was trying to be rock :))

And that is just a cursory examination. But these guys
arent' dumb, they'll get a lot of free publicity for this
nonsense :)

10. When will people learn from these lists.....
I'm only 33 but I remember in the 80's getting copies of Rolling Stone with their "Best albums" "...of the 70's" "....of the 80's etc. and people would get all up in arms over them.

These things are nothing more than publicity stunts designed to generate conversation and people actually get visibly and seriously riled over this stuff. Very strange.

Primus
Skinny Puppy
Jamiroquai

are all great musicians.

The Doors were a decent band for sure. Jim Morrison's lyrics are a little corny and cliched now, but you can't deny the influence they had on rock music.

Oh well. It won't be the first list and it won't be the last.

24. Worst music OF ALL TIME?
And the idiots concentrated solely on rock music?

what arrogance.

Not only did they include some stellar musicians on the list, they labeled it "for all time".

Like the arrogance of the US to call our baseball competition the "World Series" even though it's never actaully involving the world, just the US and Canada.

Idiots.

Where's Billy Ray Cyrus? Where's Tonya Tucker? Where's Edward Elgar? Where's Mendelsohn? Where's Rogers and Hammerstein?

26. The list... and the DU replies... are pretty comical.
Edited on Wed Aug-13-03 12:32 PM by wyldwolf
On a daily basis, people in the lounge post "best" "favorite" "most talented" "least talented" all time music lists over and over and over... usually consisting of the same artists with the same props or insults...and usually done to illustrate what music gurus you are.

Then some of you get bent out of shape when a magazine publishes a "worst" list that includes some of your favorites.

Funny...

Remember, it's ALL opinion. This list and your list. No one here is any more a music guru than the guy who published his own "DU lounge list" in that magazine.

But then Asia and Kansas made top 10 and there's plenty of other prog rock on the list.

35. Critics always hate prog-rock it seems...
I think there's some unofficial requirement that you hate progressive rock before you become a music critic. I always wondered if it's because music critics are so pretentious and get incredibly jealous of any band that approaches their level of pretentiousness. For the record, I love progressive rock, but these lists really aren't worth stressing over. Most rock critics are totally full of shit, and Blender is a pathetic rag of a magazine anyway.

Edited on Wed Aug-13-03 02:32 PM by mvd
Music is so personal that they certainly should have called it Blender's list instead. I think it's just there to draw attention to the magazine because of a couple of the choices, but that doesn't make it less arrogant. Now I really like only three on there: Mick Jagger, Goo Goo Dolls, and The Doors. Though you'll catch me listening to Celine's A New Day Has Come and Colour Of My Love sometimes. With all the bad bubblegum pop, hip-hop, modern rock, and rap-metal that's been out, they pick the Goo Goo Dolls?? And since I disagree with other artists mentioned here on this board, that further proves the point that you can't have an all-encompassing list.
