14. I'll second this one.
I have a reprint; my mom actually gave it to me, framed. Mine is a print of owls.

Other:

owl boxes, to encourage them to nest nearby;

a weekend of birding in some place she hasn't been, with birds she may not have seen

5. Bird seed. Lots of it.
maybe several varieties. People always forget, it's something bird-lovers ALWAYS need - especially with that many bird feeders. It runs out, you know, and it's not like it goes bad, even if it takes a few months to use it up (with proper storage, of course).

It's what I ask for every Christmas, but I hardly ever get it, because people think it's... I don't know, not cool enough? Whatever, it's what I WANT. Especially since the only place to get bird seed anymore is a bit out of my way - not a long way, just a hassle, you know? So, that's my suggestion.

I think they still have gift certificates or you can set up a prepaid account for her to choose AWESOME stuff from the Cornell Sapsucker Woods store.

7. Does she live in a cold climate?
And does she have a birdbath heater?

Or, maybe something not related to birds, for a change? How about a gift certificate for a massage or a facial, or some other luxury she might be reluctant to buy for herself?

8. OK Matt, I have the perfect gift for your mom.
It is a bird feeder that fits into a window. It juts out so that the birds can come in on it but it has this reflective stuff so they can't see you but you can see them. There is a store on the Cape that sells these things I think it's called the Birdwatchers' General Store, but I am sure you could find it elsewhere. I gave one to my folks and they loved it.

9. Any Nature stores in your area?
They would have good recommendations. Also, too late for this year, but if you know any woodworkers who could make her a custom feeder, I'm sure she would love it. They can make them look like just about anything. Or, how about a subscription to a birding magazine? I get Birds & Blooms, it's great!

10. She probably does not want squirrels eating the bird feed...
You should get her one of those bird feeders that shock the squirrels.
It doesn't hurt them, the little nuts keep trying.
It is so funny to watch..they sell them at most che-che bird stores.

11. Plants good in her area which attract, shelter birds?
Call a nursery in the area for ideas. Creating habitat is great for bird lovers.

And give MOMCOM our best too!

13. Does she keep a life list?
She might like a life list to keep track of her birds. National Geographic publishes a very nice life list (it is called Birder's Journal). You could also get her a guide to bird watching hot spots in her area.
