I had to go to NYC last weekend to visit a family member in a...
Manhattan mental hospital. This person, who is one of the kindest and most intelligent people you would ever want to meet, tried to off themselves, but failed.

I drove down alone, and I broke down in tears when I walked in, because memories of when I was in came flooding back.

I have written in here before that I have been in twice for short periods of time, for depressive episodes.

These institutions are all the same...same smell, same lighting, same coldness and loss of freedom.

My family member is out now, and doing better.

My visit there was entirely overwhelming, frightening and emotional, and appears to have triggered a pretty bad depressive episode with me.

If anyone has the inclination to post anything about depression, mental illness, or psychiatric institutions in my thread here, go ahead.

3. First, put the pencils away.
I'm glad the stay wasn't long.

I worked for Mental Hygiene Legal Services in New York for five years and you're right, the only thing that varies is the pastels on the wall.

I'll be at Rockland PC next week and I'll remember your post.

6. Going through this now with a young friend.
People who haven't been through this or been close to someone who has will not understand. The worst thing to me is the realization of how many people need help and can't afford it or get substandard care. The mental health system is deplorable, IMO.

I know how you feel, honestly I do.
